Albrecht, Otto (1838-1932)
Papers, 1860, 1928. 1 folder. Otto Albrecht and his brother August immigrated to Philadelphia in 1860 from the Kingdom of Hanover to avoid conscription. The collection contains an 1860 letter to his parents, in which he discusses the gubernatorial and presidential elections and in particular mentions German political activist Carl Schurz and Lincoln's campaign in Philadelphia. American Turners
The Turnverein movement was founded in Germany in 1811, and the first American Turnverein was founded in 1848. As the American Turnerbund, this popular gymnastic and cultural organization spread to all of the major cities in the country.

Beiser, diaries from her maternal grandfather, Wilhelm Hamer, and a series of short essays containing recollections from Helen Beiser's childhood and from visits abroad. Hamer's diaries document his family's voyage from Germany to Cape Town and include observations on fellow passengers, the ship and crew, and his expectations for a new life in South Africa. Bergdoll Family
Papers, 1910-1970. 2 ft., 1 OS package. The Bergdolls were a prominent Philadelphia German family who operated the Bergdoll and Sons Brewing Co. The bulk of the collection relates to Grover Cleveland Bergdoll (1893-1966), particularly his youthful experience as a race car driver, his trial and imprisonment for evading the draft during World War I, and the settlement of his estate. The papers include legal documents, financial papers, newspaper clippings, and other materials. Also present are miscellaneous documents relating to the brewery and Louis J. Bodler Family
Papers, 1837-1874. 1 in. August Bodler and his wife Katharine emigrated from Lindau, Bavaria, to the United States ca. 1850 with their four children. They settled in the Bergen Hill, New Jersey area. In the late 1850s the family moved to Germania, Potter County, Pennsylvania, where August took up farming. The collection provides a considerable amount of demographic information on the extended family and includes an account book, birth and marriage certificates, and a family genealogy. Cannstatter Volksfest Verein
Records, ca. 1873-1942. 2 ft. The Cannstatter Volksfest-Verein of Philadelphia is a German-American benevolent society founded in 1873 by a group of local businessmen including biscuit-maker Godfrey Keebler and brewer Christian Schmidt. The stated goals of the group from its inception were to uphold German culture, sociability, and charity through a yearly festival in the tradition of the annual harvest festival at Schwabian Spa in Bad
Cannstatt, Germany. Funds raised at this event were donated to meedy individuals and institutions such as hospitals and orphanages. With the decline in German immigration to the United States the Cannstatter has become more of a social and cultural organization rather than a mutual aid society. The collection is composed primarily of entertainment committee and director's meeting minutes, membership lists, and miscellaneous printed items. In German and English. Gift of the Organization.

Cronau, Rudolf (1855-1939)

Solingen, Prussia in 1855 and came to the United States in 1880, settling in Phillips Manor, New York. He was a reporter, writer, traveler, and lecturer. The collection is an assemblage of autographs and autograph letters, some accompanied by biographical information, primarily of German Americans. Most were collected by Cronau on his travels in the American West. Also present are a passport for Cronau and watercolor paintings by the German biologist Ernst

Hintz (Hinz) Family
Papers, 1792-1913. .25 ft. Friederich Hintz (Hinz), a carpenter, was born in Poland and came to the United States 1853 from Konigsberg, Germany. He lived in East Cambridge and Roxborough, Massachusetts. In 1856 his wife Maria and their three daughters joined him. They later settled in New Ulm, Minnesota. The collection contains correspondence between Hintz and his wife before their reunion in America. His letters describe his voyage and living conditions in the United States. Included are his descriptions of work as a carpenter and cabinetmaker, hard times, and American politics. Letters from Maria's family discuss conditions in the old country. Also included are passports, a vaccination certificate, papers relating to Hintz's professional qualifications and experience, and to the purchase of property in New Ulm, and other personal items. Hutterian Brethren
Records (microfilm), 1524-1960. 108 reels. The Hutterian Brethren or Hutterites are a German-speaking Anabaptist sect which dates from the 16th century. Originally centered in Moravia and adjacent Slovakia, they have lived in the western United States since 1874 and also in western Canada since 1918. The collection contains records of Hutterite history and theology in Europe and the United States. Language varies. Inventory available. Gift of John Hostetler.
Indenture
Document, 1732. 1 item. The collection consists of an indenture for Mathias (surname illegible) from Durlach, Baden-Durlach, who was to serve David Kaufman "of Oley in the county of Philadelphia" in exchange for his passage. The document specifies the terms of service and bears the signatures of Henry Pastorius and John Ashmead as witnesses. In English. Register available.

National Carl Schurz Association
Records, 1930-1970s. 138 ft. The National Carl Schurz Association was founded as the Carl Schurz Memorial Foundation in New York in 1930, to "foster American-German friendship and cultural exchange." It was intended to serve as an administrative agency for separately-endowed trusts formed for specific purposes. The first trust founded was the Oberlander Trust, established in 1930 to enable American citizens active in cultural or civic enterprises to visit German-speaking countries. Other foundation programs were concerned with the teaching of German in the United States and the circulation of German films and books. The foundation hosted art exhibitions and maintained a library and an active publication program, producing both books and the American-German Review. The organization moved to headquarters in Philadelphia's Old Custom House ca. 1939. The organization is currently inactive. The organization records include administrative files from the Oberlander Trust, and correspondence, minutes, computer tapes and discs, financial records, materials from affiliated teachers' associations, scrapbooks, and uncataloged photographs. The German Daily Gazette Publishing Company published the Philadelphia Morgen-Gazette from 1892 to 1918. In 1918 it changed its name to the Philadelphia Gazette Publishing Company and the newspaper became the Philadelphia Gazette-Democrat. Schurz, Carl (1829-1906)
Carl Schurz was born in Liblar, near Cologne, Prussia, and immigrated to the United States with his wife Margarethe in 1852. They settled in Wisconsin, where Schurz was admitted to the bar and became active in Republican Party politics. He served as American minister to Spain in 1861-1862, as a general in the Union Army from 1862-1865, was elected to the Senate from Missouri in 1868, and served as Secretary of the Interior in 1877-1881. Throughout his career he was an active spokesman for the German-American community.

Records, 1859-1876. 2 volumes. The Ancient Order of Druids was founded as a friendly society in London in 1781. They adopted masonic rites and were introduced in the United States in 1833. Records (microfilm), 1800-1947. 27 reels. Records of state and regional governing conferences of predominately German-American predecessor bodies of the Methodist Church. Churches represented are the Evangelical Association, Evangelical Church, United Brethren in Christ, and the Methodist Episcopal Church. The collection also contains materials for Swedish and Mexican-American conferences of these churches.
