HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Mutual Aid Society of Castrogiovannesi, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was organized in June, 1911 and incorporated in April, 1913, to promote a "social and civic spirit" among its members and to provide benefits in the event of indigence, sickness, and death. Membership was restricted to natives of Castrogiovanessi and the surrounding province of Caltanisetta in central Sicily, and to their sons born in America.
PROVENANCE
The records were donated to the Balch Institute in 1986 by Mr. Paul Farina. The collection was processed in July 1991 by Richard D. Chicko with the assistance of Balch archivist Monique Bourque.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The records of this society include a complete series of membership and financial information for the years from 1911 to 1935. Included in the collection are the detailed dues books for Guiseppe Farina covering the period from 1935 to 1952.
