Abstract
This collection contains the papers of the Batcheler, Hartshorne, and Sahlin families, descended from Axel (1826-March 5, 1909) and Axeline Sahlin (1834-1922), a Swedish couple whose children lived in Europe and the United States. Four generations of the family are documented here, with documentation centering around five families. In the United States, the family is represented by Gertrude Chandler (July 17, 1860-1953) and Axel Sahlin (1855-1937); their daughter Ellen Sahlin (February 21, 1895-June 4, 1988) and her husband, Judge Richard Hartshorne (February 29, 1888-September 19,1975); and their daughter, Penelope Hartshorne (1928-2007) and her husband, George Batcheler(1926-2009). The Swedish side of the family is represented by Axel and Axeline Sahlin and the family of their daughter, Essie Sahlin (1859-1950) and her husband, Simon Johannes Boëthius (1850-1924). The contents of this collection are mostly correspondence and other personal papers, including diaries, artwork, school work, and genealogical research on all branches of the family. There are also a good deal of photographs, documenting all four generations of the family and their relatives.

Biographical/Historical note

The Batcheler, Hartshorne, and Sahlin families as documented in this collection begin with Axel and Axeline Sahlin, a Swedish couple who lived in Uppsala in the late 19th century. The families of their children live in the United States and Sweden, and this collection contains documents from families on both sides of the Atlantic. Lieutenant Axel Sahlin (1826-March 5, 1909) and  Axeline Örtendahl Sahlin (1834-1922) were both from Värmlandsnäs, Sweden. Axel worked in Uppsala and at the Wermlands Enskilda Bank in Arvika in the 1880s. Axeline Örtendahl Sahlin was the daughter of Anders Örtendahl (1791-1872) and Emilie Wikström Örtendahl (d. 1879). They owned two houses in Kristinedahl and Ekholmen (at Lake Vänern), although the Ekholmen house burned down in 1860s. Axel and Axeline had two children: Axel Sahlin, whose family settled in the United States, and Essie Sahlin Boëthius, who raised a family in Sweden.

United States:

Axel Sahlin (1855-1937) was born in Ed, Värmland, Sweden. He graduated from the Swedish University of Technology in Stockholm in 1877 and afterward began a career in iron manufacturing and engineering. Shortly after his graduation, he received a letter of introduction to Karl Wittgenstein and visited his iron firm in Austria. It may have been Wittgenstein who suggested that Axel move to America to get started in the iron and steel industry. After working as a rail inspector in England, Germany, and Belgium in 1880, Axel moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1881 and worked at the Cambria Steel Company in Johnstown, Pennsylvania until 1886. That year he accepted a position as chief engineer of the Pottstown Iron Company, a position he held until 1891. He then moved to New York and worked as a consulting engineer from 1891 to 1893. For a time he was superintendent of the Maryland Steel Company, and then moved to Europe to work on various projects, mostly for American companies. In 1903 he entered into a partnership with Julian Kennedy, forming Kennedy, Sahlin and Company, Ltd., of London and Brussels, a company he helped to run until 1914. While part of this firm, Axel moved to Brussels, Belgium and stayed there until the outbreak of World War I forced him to relocate back to England. Kennedy, Sahlin, and Co. developed the first mills for the Tata Iron and Steel Company in Sakchi, Jamshedpur, India, and Axel visited India while working on this project twice: in 1907-1908 and 1911. He was involved in the construction and development of iron mills in Europe, India, Africa, and one in Brazil, although the Brazil project was never finished. In 1920 he became head of the London-based firm, International Construction, Ltd.. He lived the last years of his life in Monte Carlo, although he continued to travel frequently.

On December 4, 1884 Axel eloped with Gertrude Chandler and they were married in Philadelphia. The couple had two children: Robert Chandler Sahlin (1889-1967) and Ellen Fritz Sahlin (February 21, 1895-June 4, 1988). When Axel moved to Europe, his family first settled in Millon, England and then followed him to Brussels, Belgium. This was temporary, however, and after 1907 they spent most of their time in the United States. After living apart for many years, Gertrude and Axel divorced in 1915 and Axel remarried the following year to "Nita," a Mrs. J. Bergin from England. Late in life he remarried again (although it is unclear whether this was following the death or divorce of his second wife) to Louise Harnly of Pottstown, PA. He was visiting her family in the United States when he died in 1937.

Gertrude Chandler Sahlin (July 17, 1860-1953) was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. She attended school at Ivy Hall in Bridgeton, New Jersey. After marrying Axel Sahlin in 1884, Gertrude moved frequently to accompany or visit him in the United States and abroad, including long stays in England and Belgium, and a trip to India in 1911. In October 1913–March 1914, Gertrude and her daughter, Ellen Fritz Sahlin, visited her son, Robert Chandler Sahlin, in India, where he was working for the Tata Iron and Steel Company. They returned to the United States by way of a long voyage through Southeast and East Asia. In the last years of their marriage, Axel and Gertrude lived separate lives, he in Europe and she in Pennsylvania. After their divorce in 1915, she bought a farm and farmhouse (previously known as "Applejack Farm") outside of Greenwich, Connecticut. In 1916 Gertrude purchased Greenfield Farm, which was previously owned by her aunt, Hannah Ann Wilson. The farm was located outside of Highland Township, near Parkesburg, in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Gertrude Cahndler Sahlin was the niece of steel industry pioneer John Fritz (1822-1913). The son of George Fritz and Mary Meharg, John spent most of his childhood working on his father's farm and had little formal education. Nevertheless, he invented the three-high mill and improved on the use of open-hearth furnaces, the Whitworth forging-press, large steam hammers, and the manufacture of armor plates. He worked at the Cambria Iron Works in Johnstown, where he developed the three-high mill, and later managed the Bethlehem Iron Company. He retired in 1892 and in 1894 was named president of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. From 1895 to 1896 he was president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. In 1902 the annual John Fritz Award was established by the American Association of Engineering Societies to award achievement in any field of pure or applied science. In 1912, a year before his death, he published his autobiography. John Fritz married Ellen Maxwell (1833-1908) and the couple had one daughter, Gertrude (1853-1860), who died young.

Robert (Bob) Chandler Sahlin (1889-1967) was born in Stowe, Pennsylvania, outside of Pottstown. From 1898 through 1904 he lived in Sweden with his aunt, Essie Sahlin Boëthius, and her family, and attended school in Uppsala. In 1905 he returned to the United States and continued his education at the Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut until 1907. After leaving the Taft School he briefly worked as a "machinery erector" in steel mills in Germany, Belgium, and England. In 1908 he returned to the United States to attend Bethlehem Preparatory School for a year, and then attended Lehigh University from 1909 to 1910. Throughout his education, Bob had difficulty in school and struggled first to gain admittance to Lehigh University and then to keep up with his classes. He left the university after a year and spent part of 1911 traveling in the American West, temporarily enrolling in a business school in Chicago. Partly because of his educational difficulties, in 1911 his father, Axel, secured a job for him at the new iron mill being constructed for the Tata Iron and Steel Company in Sakchi, India. He worked there until 1914, when he enlisted in the United States Army. He served from 1915 until 1919, and was stationed at Camp Sherman, Ohio; Youngstown, Ohio; and Andernach, Germany. During his time in the Army, he was engaged to Polly (or Pauli) Bissell, although the relationship did not last. After the close of World War I, Bob worked in house construction in Long Island, New York through the late 1920s, and later was a sales engineer for the Lukenweld Company in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. In 1935 Bob married Nancy Roe Repplier and they moved to Greenfield Farm in Pennsylvania.

Ellen Fritz Sahlin (February 21, 1895-June 4, 1988) was born in Sparrows Point, Maryland. Like her brother, she spent some of her childhood (1905-1906) living with Essie and Simon Johannes Boëthius in Sweden. Unlike Bob, however, she only lived in Sweden for a year and instead spent most of her childhood with her mother and father in Millon, England and Brussels, Belgium. In 1910, Ellen enrolled in Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Massachusetts and she graduated in 1913. In 1917 she earned a degree in Interior Decoration from the New York School of Fine and Applied Art. In 1919 she married Richard Hartshorne and they moved to East Orange, New Jersey in 1920. Ellen and Richard had four children: Richard Harsthorne, Nancy Hartshorne Bell, John Fritz Hartshorne, and Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler. In the 1960s, Ellen and Richard moved to Philadelphia into a house on American Street renovated by George and Penelope Batcheler.

Richard Hartshorne (February 29, 1888-September 19,1975) was the son of William Sidney Hartshorne and Margaret Bentley Hartshorne of New Jersey. He graduated from Princeton in 1909 and from Columbia University Law School in 1912. During World War I he served in the United States Navy as an officer, working at the Office of Naval Operations in Washington, D. C. In 1919 he married Ellen Fritz Sahlin and they settled in East Orange, New Jersey, where Richard worked as a judge in the Essex County Court of Common Pleas. In the 1920s he purchased an island near Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire, which he and the family named "Ellen's Isle." Shortly after he bought a beach house in Island Beach State Park, New Jersey, which was thereafter known as "The Judge's Shack." In 1951 he was appointed to the New Jersey United States District Court by President Truman, an office he held until retiring in 1961. In the 1960s, Ellen and Richard Hartshorne moved to Philadelphia, to a house on American Street renovated by and across the street from their daughter, Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler. Richard died in 1975 after years of deteriorating health due to arthritis and the loss of his sight.

Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler (1928-2007) attended school at Dana Hall School and Bennington College in Vermont. She then moved to Chicago to earn a degree in architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology, studying under Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. After graduating in 1953, she moved to Sweden where she worked with her relative Gerda Boëthius at the Zorn Museum in Mora, studied Swedish architecture, and worked for the Nordiska Museet in Stockholm. After returning to the United States in 1954 she lived with her aunt and uncle, Robert Chandler Sahlin and Nancy Roe Sahlin, at Greenfield Farm in Chester County, Pennsylvania. In the 1960s she was hired by the National Park Service as a preservation architect, the only woman working on the restoration of Independence Hall. Around the same time, she moved to the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia and became involved in the restoration of historic homes in that area. Penelope's preservation and restoration projects included Assembly Hall, Congress Hall, Old City Hall, Franklin Court, the City Tavern, the Edgar Allen Poe House, and Old Swedes Church. She retired from the National Park Service in 1993, but continued to contribute to restoration projects as a consultant and volunteer. After her retirement, she was also active in various cultural projects, including an oral history project about Society Hill and an assistance program for elderly Society Hill residents. In 1991 she earned the Preservationist of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Museum and Historical Commission and in 2000 she was awarded the James Biddle Award for Lifetime Achievement in Historic Preservation by the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia. She passed away in 2007 in Philadelphia.

In 1968, Penelope married George Batcheler, an architect, whom she met while restoring homes in Elfreth's Alley. Together they bought and restored houses at 314 and 315 American Street, the first as a home for Penelope's parents, and the second as their own home. After the deaths of Ellen and Richard Hartshorne, Penelope and George move into 314 American Street.

Sweden:

Essie Sahlin (1859-1950), daughter of Axel and Axeline Sahlin, married  Simon Johannes Boëthius (1850-1924) in 1883. He became a professor at the University of Uppsala, and the couple raised their family in the city. They had four children: Gösta, Simon Bertil, Axel, and Gerda, all of whom had careers in or closely related to academia and historical scholarship.

Gerda Boëthius (1890-1962) was an art historian and museum director who is also known as a vocal and enthusiastic advocate for preserving Swedish culture. She was the director of Zorn Museum in Mora, Sweden, which collects the works of Swedish painter Anders Zorn (1860-1920). She lectured in Sweden and the United States about traditional Swedish culture and crafts.

Gösta Boëthius (b.1883), was a jurist and soldier who married Hannah Åckeberg.

Simon Bertil Boëthius (1885-1974) – who went by Bertil – was the  riksantikvarie, or national archivist, of Sweden. He married Gerda Fahlberg Boëthius, and they both died in 1974. They had four children: Carl-Gustaf, Per Ullric, Essie, and Jacob.

Carl-Gustaf Boëthius (1915-2001), was a progressive social activist and an editor for the newspaper,  Vår Kyrka (Our Church). He married Brita (Billie) Andersén and they had two children: Gunilla and Maria-Pia. Both Carl-Gustaf and his daughter, Maria-Pia, advocated liberal and feminist social policies. Maria-Pia is still active in Swedish and international feminist and gay rights political and social causes.

Scope and Contents note

This collection is arranged by family group and contains correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, printed materials, newspaper clippings, artwork, ephemera, and artifacts. The items in this collection range from 1789 to 2007, although the bulk of the material dates from 1880 to 2007. The collection's creator, Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler, conducted extensive genealogical research and her involvement with this collection is evident in nearly every folder. Even folders of early family correspondence written in Swedish may contain her marginal notes or summaries of a letter's contents on its envelope. Because of her knowledge of the family, her arrangement has been left intact whenever possible. Family groups are divided into primary subjects (usually a mother and father), and their documents are then divided into subseries based on subject or genre. These subseries are arranged chronologically with a few exceptions. Series V: "The Boëthius family" is arranged alphabetically by family member. The subseries "Genealogical research," "Greenfield Farm," "Preservation and restoration," and "Other materials," under Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler's subseries are alphabetical subject files. Series VII: "Graphic materials," is dividied by format (albums, photographs, negatives, etc.) and arranged alphabetically by subject within those formats.

Series I: Axel Sahlin and Axeline Örtendahl Sahlin is arranged chronologically and dates from 1870 to 1954. It contains mostly correspondence in Swedish and English between Axeline Sahlin and her children and grandchildren. Letters to Axel from his both of his parents are in Swedish, while letters to Gertrude and her children are usually written by Axeline and always in English. Axeline's handwriting becomes nearly unintelligible in the later correspondence as her eyesight failed, making the letters very difficult to read. The correspondence discusses current events in Sweden (including World War I and the relationship between Sweden and Norway), the health of various family members, changes to and renovations of Axel and Axeline's home, and the marriages, births, deaths, and general well-being of family members.

Series II: Axel Sahlin and Gertrude Chandler Sahlin dates from 1869 to 1949 and is mostly correspondence from Axel and Gertrude to their children, Robert (Bob) Chandler Sahlin and Ellen Fritz Sahlin Hartshorne. Axel and Gertrude's "Correspondence" and "Other materials" subseries are arranged chronologically. Axel's correspondence includes the details of his business ventures in the United States and abroad, news of his family in Sweden, and commentary on current events like United States presidential elections and World War I. His letters to Gertrude and Ellen tend to focus on family news, but his letters to Bob contain more details of his business, including diagrams of iron and steel mill machinery and the details of various projects. Early letters to and from Axel mention the 1889 Johnstown Flood and how it affected Gertrude's family in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Axel's papers are particularly interesting because they document the development of the early iron and steel industry in the United States and abroad, especially in India. His letters and his "Personal Impressions of India" – along with the correspondence and photographs of Robert Chandler Sahlin (Series III and VII) – offer a particularly detailed depiction of the construction and early days of the Tata Iron and Steel Company and its mill in Sakchi, Jamshedpur, India.

The correspondence of Gertrude Chandler Sahlin covers the details of her life in England, Brussels, and the United States. Both Gertrude and Axel's letters include information about the education of their children, especially Bob's schooling in Sweden and the difficulties he faced once he returned to school in the United States. Later letters to Bob and Ellen from both Gertrude and Axel discuss their divorce, and Axel's letters in particular attempt to repair damaged family relationships in the wake of the decision to separate.

Series III: Robert Chandler Sahlin dates from 1890 to 1992. Both the "Correspondence" and "Other materials" subseries are arranged chronologically. Bob's letters are mostly correspondence to and from family and friends, covering his time in Sweden with the Boëthius family, education in the United States, employment at the Tata Iron and Steel Company in India, and his service in the U.S. Army during World War I. The majority of his correspondence is to and from Axel Sahlin, Gertrude Chandler Sahlin, and Ellen Sahlin Hartshorne, although there are some letters from school friends and acquaintances in the engineering field. Bob's correspondence contains information about a relatively wide range of topics, including life and schooling in late 19th century Sweden, private school education in early 20th century America, the industrial development of early 20th century India, and World War I. His World War I correspondence includes letters from Polly (Pauli) Bissell, to whom he was at one time engaged. Bob's "Other materials" subseries contain documents from a trip to see the still under construction Panama Canal in 1910 or 1911 with the American Institute of Mining Engineers.

Series IV: Richard Hartshorne and Ellen Sahlin Hartshorne dates from 1887 to 2003 and all subseries are arranged chronologically. This series is mostly Ellen Hartshorne's documents, as most of Richard Hartshorne's papers are housed at the New Jersey Historical Society. Richard Hartshorne's subseries includes love letters to Ellen during their courtship in 1917-1919, and personal papers that reflect some of his hobbies and interests, like New Jersey history and genealogy.

Ellen Sahlin Hartshorne's "Correspondence" subseries spans from 1903 to 1984 and contains mostly letters to family, both immediate and extended. Ellen maintained a life-long correspondence with the Boëthius family, sometimes writing in Swedish but more often in English. Most letters from her time at Dana Hall and New York School of Fine and Applied Art are written to her mother and brother. She was an enthusiastic and expressive writer, and her letters include many details of life at a women's college in the early 20th century, such as academic activities, excursions to nearby cities, dances and social events, clothing purchases, and visiting lecturers. Her later correspondence contains many letters written to and by overseas relatives as she began to conduct genealogical research on the Chandler, Sahlin, and Boëthius families.

Her "Early childhood and education" subseries spans from 1890 to 1917. This subseries includes materials in English, Swedish, and French. These items document her time spent in Swedish and Belgian schools and include class work, personal notebooks, and artwork.

Ellen Sahlin Hartshorne's "Other materials" subseries spans from 1887 to 2003, although the later documents are Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler's additions. This subseries reflects Ellen's love of travelling, genealogy, and drawing. It includes her diaries, most of which are "line-a-day" books that leave little room for detail, but cover a thirty-year period that includes her education, travels, marriage, and raising a family. Ellen was a talented artist and this subseries also contains many of her sketchbooks, watercolors, and other bits of artwork. She frequently sketched family members and scenes from trips in the United States and abroad.

Series V: The Boëthius family contains letters and documents written by and about various members of the Swedish branch of the Sahlin family. This series dates from 1879 to 2006 and is arranged alphabetically by the names of family members. Most of the correspondence is written to either Ellen Sahlin Hartshorne or Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler and the majority of it is in Swedish. Letters include family news, Christmas cards, newspaper and magazine clippings about family members, genealogical information, and discussion of world politics. Axel and Gerda Boëthius are represented the most in this series, both in correspondence and personal papers. The papers relating to both Axel and Gerda are mostly representative of their careers and professional interests.

Series VI: George Batcheler and Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler spans from 1789 to 2007 and is arranged into three subseries: "George Batcheler," "Penelope Batcheler," and "Travel." George Batcheler's materials are all arranged chronologically and are mostly personal papers. These items include yearbooks and high school reunion information, architectural plans for various projects (professional and personal), and other documents relating to his career as an architect.

Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler's subseries is itself divided into five subseries: "Correspondence," "Genealogical research," "Greenfield Farm," "Preservation and restoration," and "Other materials." Penelope Batcheler's correspondence is arranged chronologically and spans from 1936 to 2007. It is the most extensive body of correspondence series in the collection, and includes letters to family, friends, colleagues, and other acquaintances. Early correspondence between Penelope and her parents describes her education in great detail, including her decision to study architecture in Chicago and to travel to Sweden after graduation. Most of her correspondence is personal rather than professional, and includes descriptions of the domestic and international trips she took both on her own and with George, the growth of the Hartshorne family, and preservation projects that she undertook after retirement from the National Park Service. Letters frequently mention "Uncan" and "Fancy," the family's nicknames for Robert Chandler Sahlin and Nancy Roe Sahlin. Correspondence folders from the late 1990s through 2007 include printed emails, which sometimes contain printed attachments of digital images.

The "Genealogical research" subseries spans from 1789 to 2005 and is arranged alphabetically by family and chronologically within the family group. This subseries contains correspondence, vital records, family trees, and other research done by Chandler, Boëthius, and Hartshorne family members. The contents of these folders are mostly as Penelope left them, and as such are mostly a mix of older and newer documents. It is not uncommon to find an 1880s document in a folder along with Penelope's 2005 notes on the importance of that document. The Chandler and Fritz families are the most extensively documented in this subseries. The accumulated Chandler family research files trace the lineage back to medieval England (and according to one source, back to Charlemagne) and follow the family's growth in the United States. The Fritz family research files are mostly focused on John Fritz and his contributions to steel manufacturing and Pennsylvania industry. The John Fritz materials include information on winners of the John Fritz Medal and on his estate. For an overview of Sahlin and Hartshorne genealogy, researchers should consult the Hartshorne-Sahlin families fan chart (Oversize folder 12).

The "Greenfield Farm" subseries spans from the 1870s to 2006 and is arranged alphabetically by subject. The documents in this subseries reflect the changes made to the farm by George and Penelope Batcheler and the farm's sale, including the donation of many family artifacts and heirlooms to local historical societies and museums. Researchers interested in the farm should also see the photographs in Series VII: "Graphic materials," Subseries: "Places."

The "Preservation and restoration" subseries spans from 1950 to 2007 and is arranged alphabetically by subject. These documents are not representative of Penelope Batcheler's career as a preservation architect, although they do contain a few plans and blueprints for the Independence Hall renovation carried out in the 1970s. The bulk of this subseries is documentation of projects that Penelope carried out on her own, both before and after her retirement. The renovations to houses George and Penelope owned on American Street are particularly well represented. Many Philadelphia-area historic buildings and cultural institutions are mentioned in these files as well, as Penelope was on many local committees and involved in various restoration projects either professionally or as a volunteer consultant.

The "Other materials" subseries spans from 1888 to 2007 and is arranged alphabetically by subject. This subseries includes documentation of Penelope's work on Project Philadelphia 19106 and The Village project, two projects that she was heavily invested in during the last years of her life. Project Philadelphia 19106 was an oral and written history project intended to document the changes in Society Hill during the 20th and early 21st centuries. A book and website were planned, as well as a possible partnership with the Urban Archives at Temple University, but the project never came to fruition. The Village was an assistance program for elderly Society Hill residents who wanted to remain in their own homes but still needed access to various services. Based on a successful program in Boston, this project also never came to pass, but Penelope was involved in the early planning stages. This series also includes personal papers, like address books, research and documentation of her family's beach house ("The Judge's Shack"), sketchbooks, and materials related to her education. Drawings and sketchbooks contain artwork made by Penelope, while folders titled "artwork" contain pieces done by other artists, likely pieces that decorated the Batchelers' home.

George and Penelope Batcheler's "Travel" subseries spans from 1946 to 2004 and is arranged alphabetically by country. Many of Penelope's original folder titles have been kept, as they reflect trips that spanned several U.S. states or foreign countries. The documents in this subseries are mostly maps and tourism brochures, most of which are annotated by Penelope and George, indicating where they traveled and when.

Series VII: Graphic materials is divided by subject and type, with albums, cased photographs, slides, negatives, movie film, and glass plates separated from the rest of the photographs. Materials in this series range in date from the 1840s to 2005. Photographs are divided into two main groups: people and places. People are arranged alphabetically by family, and within family groups, alphabetically by first name. Places are arranged alphabetically as well. The arrangement of the negatives mirrors the photograph arrangement, although researchers should note that negatives do not exist for every photograph in this collection. Among the photographs of people, the Hartshorne family members (Richard, Ellen, and their children) and Penelope and George Batcheler are the most well represented subjects. Of the photographs of places, Ellen's Isle, Greenfield Farm, and the construction of Penelope and George Batcheler's house on Tataboro Road in New Hampshire appear the most often. The nature of this collection of family papers means that subjects appear in photographs associated with other family groups, so researchers looking for photos of a specific family member are encouraged to be thorough in their search. For example, photographs of Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler can be found in the files under her name, but also in the Hartshorne family photos, and in the photographs of the Swedish side of the family due to her trips to Sweden. The photograph series includes some late 19th and early 20th century photo postcards which were found with photographs in the original order of the collection. Printed digital photos can be found throughout the photograph series, but also in correspondence series, depending on their original location. This series includes glass Agfa color plates, examples of a rare early color photography process, which show photographs of Greenfield Farm and date from the 1920s or 1930s.
