- Abstract
- Jasper Bentley, a British native, worked as a purchasing agent in Philadelphia for Surpass Leather, a large British company that opened tanneries in the city. He lived in Mt. Airy from 1927 to 1954 when he returned to England to retire. He created these six scrapbooks from newspaper clippings he collected from various Philadelphia papers between primarily September 1939 and 1944. Each scrapbook is arranged chronologically and generally cover at least twelve consecutive months of wartime events. The clippings include articles, cartoons, and maps, and the vast majority of them relate to the war in Europe and events that affected England, though a few articles discuss the affects of the war on Philadelphians. Loose clippings from each volume have been removed to folders (Box 1) and inventoried accordingly.
