Abstract
The Brittin and Solly (Soley) families of Philadelphia became connected in 1879 with the union of Isaac V. Brittin (1852-1932), born in Holmesburg, and Maria Eleanor Solly (1856-1949). This collection contains a wide assortment of family history material, including photographs, genealogies, vital records, notes, and correspondence that trace the family back to 17th century ancestors from Holland and Germany on the Brittin side, and to one Robert Hood of unknown origination, who settled on Long Island, New York, in 1699. Material in the collection is arranged by family members, and other names including Van Horn and Lewis. There is also a set of Civil War letters dating between 1861-1863 from William W. Solly addressed to his family via his father Obadiah Solly at Holmesburg, 23 Ward, Philadelphia. Most of William's letters originated from various camps, such as Camp Pierpont, Camp Tennally, and Camp Upton Hill. Solly enlisted in Philadelphia in 1861 and served with Company E, 3rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Reserve Corps.
