Abstract
This collection contains the papers of various members of the Houston, Brown, and allied families, mainly Charles Boone Houston I (1832-1902), Howard Hathaway Houston (1861-1929), Charles Boone Houston II (1890-1973), Margaret Houston Brown (1915-1987), Medford Jennings Brown (1884-1936), Charles Stuart Brown (1915-1993), and Bruce Maitland Brown (1947-2020). The Houston men were bankers and entrepreneurs in the coal, lumber, and steel industries of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Howard H. Houston served as mayor of the City of Chester. Medford Brown was president of a coal company, and his son Charles Stuart was manager of the advertising department at Avisco. Bruce Brown started his career in public relations with the Food and Drug Administration, but shifted professions midlife and spent the remainder of his career as a philanthropy consultant and a grantmaker. He established the HBE Foundation with his wife Elaine Eldrege Brown in 1987. The materials in the collection include personal papers, vital records, extensive correspondence, many photographs and scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and some artifacts. The majority of the material dates from the 20th century.

Background note

This collection is divided into two main, topical groups of material. The first group concerns the families of Charles Boone Houston I and his descendants. The second group concerns the families of Medford Jennings Brown Sr. and his descendants. The biographical sketches provided here are based solely on the information contained within this collection and are not intended to represent complete or authoritative biographies of the individuals represented.

HOUSTON FAMILY

John Houston

Various efforts have been made to trace the Houston family to its earliest origins in Scotland. An account published in a memorial tribute to C. B. Houston lists the originator of this branch as Robert Houston, who emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland, to the district of Londonderry, Ireland, in 1690. The materials in this collection begin with the descendants of John Houston, the great-great-grandson of Robert Houston.

John Houston was born in Northern Ireland. The dates of his birth and death are not known. According to the source noted above, he emigrated to the United States as a young man, where he married his first wife, Sarah McElree, in 1822; they had three daughters. After his wife’s death, he returned to Ireland, where he married Elizabeth Boone and began another family. In 1834, he re-emigrated to the United States with his new family, this time permanently. They settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where John Houston owned and farmed a “plantation.”

His second marriage produced twelve children; three are known to have died in infancy or early childhood, and at least five lived to adulthood. These five were Charles Boone, John, Thomas James, David Fleming, and George Orr.

Charles Boone Houston I

The third of John and Elizabeth Houston’s children, Charles B. Houston, was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1832. He came to America with his parents at the age of two but did not become a naturalized citizen until 1884. A biographical sketch of his son, Howard, states that C. B. Houston was educated at the Normal School at Millersville, Pennsylvania, and that afterward he ran a merchandising business in Gap, Lancaster County, with his cousin Samuel J. Boone. From 1863 to 1869, he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Then for the next two years, he “joined” his brother Thomas in the construction of a blooming furnace in Greensboro, North Carolina. Afterwards, he worked for McCormick and Company at their ironworks in Harrisburg.

This account goes on to state that in 1874 he and his partner John Roach built the Chester Rolling Mill. After this plant was purchased, he continued to manage it for sixteen years. He then resigned to look after his own interests in the coal and iron industries of Virginia and West Virginia. His brothers THomas and David were frequent business partners in these ventures, particularly the Houston Coal and Coke Company in Elkhorn, West Virginia.

His business affairs included directorship of the Chester National Bank, the Delaware River Iron Shipbuilding Company, the Crozer Steel and Iron Company of Roanoke, Virginia (of which his brother David was the manager), Edith Iron and Mining Company, the Twelve Pole Coal and Lumber Company, Mate Creek Coal and Lumber Company, and Roanoke Coal and Lumber Company. There are papers relating to many of these companies in the collection.

In 1860, he married Margaret Ann Hathaway (known as Maggie). She was the daughter of Philip R. Hathaway and Margaret Hathaway (nee Hull). She was the third of the Hathaways’ eight children, all but one of whom lived to adulthood. The collection includes some papers relating to her parents and siblings.

Mr. and Mrs. Houston had three children. Howard Hathaway Houston was born in 1861 and died in 1929. Mary was born in 1862 and died in 1865. Thomas Edgar was born in 1866; coincidentally, he also died in the same year as his brother, 1929.

Charles Boone Houston died in 1902 as a result of heavy injuries sustained while he was inspecting one of his family’s mining operations. Ten years later, in 1912, his widow Margaret dedicated the C. B. Houston Memorial Ward of the Chester Hospital. This was a new children’s ward which was built entirely from her own donations in her husband’s memory. She died in 1914.

There are several individual photographs of both Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Houston in the collection, taken during their middle and later years. There are also two family group portraits. In addition, there are numerous portraits presumed to be of Charles Houston’s brothers (and perhaps sisters or sisters-in-law), several taken at the same studio and all bearing a strong family resemblance.

Howard Hathaway Houston

The elder of Charles B. Houston’s surviving children, Howard H. Houston was born in Christiana, Lancaster County, on February 16, 1861. According to the same biographical source quoted above, he was educated in public schools, as well as Hamberg-Seiter Academy in Greensboro, North Carolina; Chester Academy and Chester Grammar School; and graduated from the Normal School in West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1881.

He worked in the Chester Rolling Mill, a family concern, for thirteen years. In 1892, he formed a partnership with his father and J. Max Barnard, called “C. B. Houston and Company.” Howard H. Houston became chairman of this company after his father’s death in 1902. He also followed in his father’s footsteps in his other business interests, both in West Virginia and closer to home. He became vice-president of the Houston Coal and Coke Company (Elkhorn), and a director of Chester National Bank. He was also a director of the Cambridge Trust Company, the Chester Street Railway, the Chester and Media Electric Railway, and the Chester Free Library. In addition, he served as treasurer of the Ironworkers’ Building and Loan Association and as a board member of the Chester Hospital.

Like his uncle David Fleming Houston, he also had an active career in Republican party politics. In 1887, he represented the borough of South Chester in the Chester city council. In 1888, he was elected to a four-year term as councilman for the Eleventh Ward and then was reelected to this post. In 1902, during his second term as councilman, Howard H. Houston was nominated as the Republican candidate for mayor and won by “the largest majority ever given” for that office. He served as mayor of Chester from 1902 to 1906.

In keeping with his political career, Houston led an equally active social life. He was a member of the Union League of Philadelphia, the Chester Club, Rotary Club, Penn Club, Art Club, Springhaven Club, and Rolling Green Club. He also belonged to Masons, Knights Templar, and other fraternal societies.

On October 3, 1888, Howard H. Houston married Nellie Maitland. Little is known of her family, but census records show that Nellie Maitland was born in Canada in 1865. The photographs in this collection also suggest that while she was still quite young her family lived in Chicago, before settling in Negaunee, Michigan. The Houstons had only one child, Charles Boone Houston II, named after his grandfather.

Mr. and Mrs. Houston enjoyed touring the country by automobile, as attested by photographic scrapbooks of their travels in this collection. In 1929, shortly after returning from one of these trips, Howard H. Houston died of a heart attack. His wife Nellie continued to live in the home which they had built, called “Houstonia,” until her death in 1951.

Charles Boone Houston II

The only child of Howard H. and Nellie Houston, Charles Boone Houston II was born in Chester in 1890. He graduated from the DeLancey School. He later attended Swarthmore College, and although he did not graduate, was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His copy of the 1914 Swarthmore yearbook is in this collection. In that year, he left the college to answer the call for military service. When he reported, however, he was told that he could best serve by working for his family’s coal business because coal was much needed for the war effort. Later the same year, he became Secretary of the Houston Coal and Coke Company in Elkhorn, West Virginia. Also in 1914, he married Pauline Virginia Smith. She was the daughter of Charles Arthur Smith and Laura Virginia Smith (nee Grove) of Frederick, Maryland, and later Baltimore, Maryland. The Houston’s only child, Margaret Maitland Houston, was born in 1915.

Following in his father’s and grandfather’s business tradition, Charles B. Houston II was a director of the Chester-Cambridge Bank and Trust Company (which later merged with Philadelphia National Bank). He was also a director of the First National Bank of Bluefield, West Virginia, and the First Clark National Bank of Northfork, West Virginia, and a trustee of Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates of Boston (successor to the Koppers Coal Company). In addition, he chaired the Salvation Army’s fundraising drive in McDowell County, West Virginia for two consecutive years. Also like his father, he was a Mason and belonged to the Union League of Philadelphia and the Springhaven Club of Wallingford.

He founded the Tug River Lumber Company of Welch, West Virginia, in 1924 and served continuously as its president until his retirement in 1952. Afterward, the Houstons moved to Woodstock, Virginia. He had first visited Woodstock in order to help his sister-in-law, Eleanor Paddon, who had been hurt in an automobile accident. He liked the area so much that he bought a large farmstead, which he later turned into a breeding ranch for registered Black Angus cattle. Also during his retirement, he and his wife traveled the world.

Pauline V. Houston had an active interest in genealogy. She belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Huguenot Society, and other hereditary associations. After an extended illness, she died in 1962. Charles B. Houston II died of heart failure in 1973.

Margaret Maitland Houston Brown

Margaret Maitland Houston was born in Elkhorn, West Virginia in 1915. From an early age she was known by her nickname, “Marty.”

According to an interview with her husband, C. Stuart Brown, her parents decided that she could not get a good enough education in “the coal country,“ and sent her to live with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard H. Houston, in Chester, Pennsylvania. While there, she attended “Miss Wright’s School.” The age at which Miss Houston went to live at her grandparent’s home, “Houstonia,” is not certain. Gaps in the extensive photographic scrapbooks kept by her parents suggest that the move may have been during her adolescence. A program indicates that she played in a piano recital in Media at age 11.

While attending Miss Wright’s school, she was escorted by her mother to social events at many colleges around the country. She is featured in the “Beauty” section of the Washington and Lee University yearbook. In his interview, her husband called this activity “prom trotting.”

In the spring of 1936, both C. Stuart Brown and Margaret Houston took a cruise on the MV Brittanic (sometimes recorded as the “Brittanica”). Mr. Brown was traveling with the Williams College Glee Club. Miss Houston was, as always, accompanied by her mother. Brown family tradition recounts that the two did not actually meet until they visited the island of Bermuda. Mr. Brown graduated from Williams in 1937, and in October of that year he married Miss Houston.

Margaret Houston Brown was an amateur artist. The collection includes several drawings and paintings which she produced in the years immediately before and after marriage. She died in 1987. (For further information, see the biographical sketch of C. Stuart Brown.)

Cherry Mae Dowdell Davis

Cherry Mae Dowdell Davis was born around 1900. She was an African American woman who worked as maid and housekeeper for Charles Boone Houston II, and after his death, she continued working for his estate. Her service with the family lasted for more than 50 years. Charles Boone Houston II’s will of 1956 included a provision for a monthly income after his death. Cherry Mae Davis died in 1993.

BROWN FAMILY

Medford Jennings Brown Sr.

A descendancy chart in the collection traces this branch of the Brown family to one Samuel Brown, who died in 1712. The materials in the collection which are directly related to the Brown family begin with the papers of Mr. and Mrs. Medford Jennings Brown Sr.

Medford J. Brown was born in Baltimore in 1884. His parents were Henry Gassaway Brown Jr., and Anna Estelle Brown (nee Lamb). He was educated at St. Paul’s School. According to an obituary, at an early age he went to work for the Cumberland Coal Company. He joined the Maryland Coal and Gas Company (later Maryland Coal and Coke) in 1912 and later became its president. The company operated in the Clearfield district of Pennsylvania and had its headquarters in Philadelphia. Mr. Brown also served as president of the Greensville Coal and Export Corporation of New York City and vice-president of the Maryland New River Coal Company of West Virginia.

In 1908, he married Mary Evelyn Miller (called Evelyn). All three of their children were born in the Philadelphia area. These were Medford Jennings Jr., born in 1911; Charles Stuart, born in 1915; and Helen Miller, born in 1918. The family lived in Merion, Pennsylvania, and Medford Brown was a member of the Merion Cricket Club. In 1936, he died at home after a month’s illness. According to an interview with his son C. Stuart Brown, he had been a staunch Episcopalian. Both his sons graduated from Episcopal Academy, and later from Williams College.

Evelyn Brown was the daughter of Charles Stuart Miller and Mary Lucas Miller (nee Michael). She was born in Baltimore in 1883 and died in 1970. There are relatively few papers of Mr. and Mrs. Medford Brown Sr. in the collection, but many photographs, particularly of their children, from infancy through adulthood. Helen Miller Brown married George Philip Nelson in 1943. Medford Brown Jr. married Ann Janney in 1948. While the collection has numerous photographs of both Medford Jr. and Helen, along with a few related items of correspondence and news clippings, it does not contain any of their personal papers. Rather, the bulk of the collection concerns their brother, C. Stuart Brown.

Charles Stuart Brown

Named for his maternal grandfather, C. Stuart Brown was born in Glenside, Pennsylvania, in 1915. In school he was known as Stuart, and his family and friends called him “Stu.”

He was educated at Episcopal Academy from 1928 to 1933. He attended Williams College from 1933 to 1937. It was during this time that he met Margaret Maitland Houston, whom he would later marry. During the summer after his graduation from Williams, he worked for his future father-in-law, Charles B. Houston II, in West Virginia. In October 1937, he married Margaret Houston. In the first year of their marriage, he worked for the Maryland Coal Company in their Chicago offices.

Throughout his life, C. Stuart Brown was an avid hobbyist. He participated in hobby shows while a young student at Episcopal Academy. As an adult, he collected stamps and coins. He was also a grower of dahlias and won many awards at flower shows throughout the 1960s.

Photography was another of his interests. He founded a photography club at Episcopal Academy and entered photography competitions during college. After returning from Chicago to Philadelphia, he operated a successful commercial studio of his own, specializing in children’s portraits. In his taped interview, he stated that the studio grew to the point where he had to either expand or close, so he closed the business.

After briefly working for the Atlantic Oil Company, he took the job which would lead to a permanent career with the American Viscose Company (later Avisco). He was quickly promoted through the company, and became manager of the advertising department in 1956. The Browns led a very active social life, which is well documented in their scrapbooks. They also traveled extensively and frequently vacationed in Rehoboth, Delaware, and in Delray Beach, Florida.

They lived in Moylan, Pennsylvania, and had two children. Stuart Houston (known during his childhood as “Tony”) was born in 1941, and Bruce Maitland was born in 1947. Both are represented in this portion of collection; related files include school papers, news clippings and voluminous photographs.

C. Stuart Brown was one of the founders of the Riddle Memorial Hospital. He also served as chairman of the 10,000 Trees Campaign of the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society during the mid-1970s. Among her other interests, Margaret Brown did charity work for the Chester Hospital and Riddle Memorial Hospital. After Mr. Brown’s retirement from Avisco in 1973, the couple moved to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. Margaret Houston Brown died in 1987. C. Stuart Brown died in 1993.

Bruce Maitland Brown

Bruce Maitland Brown was born in September 1947, the younger son of Charles Stuart Brown. He grew up in Moyland, Pennsylvania, and like his father attended Episcopal Academy. As a boy and young man, he played soccer. The sport was a life-long passion, and he played and officiated through his college years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in government from Lawrence University in 1969.

In November of 1969, he was drafted and served two years in the Army. His first assignment after training was a clerical position with the Congressional Division of the Fort Sam Houston Headquarters office. In March of 1971, he was transferred to Viet Nam, where he was a clerk in the Adjutant General’s Office. His work included helping to compile mortality statistics.

Upon discharge from the army in the fall of 1971, Bruce Brown enrolled at the University of Kentucky and completed a master’s degree in political science. He was hired by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1973, where he was eventually named acting deputy director for press relations. In 1986, he left the FDA to become vice president of communications at the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a national trade group for vitamin and mineral manufacturers. In 1987, he accepted a position as Vice President for charitable trust administration with Philadelphia National Bank.

Bruce Brown engaged in philanthropic work throughout his adult life, including volunteer work in the community while stationed at Fort Sam Houston. His other early experiences included fundraising for the Class of 1969 Fund at Lawrence University and serving a 2-year term as co-chair of the Lawrence University Alumni Fund. He was elected to the Lawrence University Alumni Association Board of Directors in 1982 for a three-year term. In 1989, Bruce Brown merged his professional and volunteer work and started his own philanthropic consultancy and nonprofit, the HBE Foundation. His organization provided funds to over a dozen charitable organizations annually. Most of the recipient nonprofits operated in the Philadelphia area. Bruce Brown also served on several non-profit boards during this period, including that of Eastern University and the Hoxie Harrison Smith Foundation.

In March 1983, he became engaged to Elaine Eldredge, and the couple married that September. Their son Carter Houston Brown was born in 1993. Bruce Maitland Brown passed away in 2020.

Allied Families: Lamb, Miller, and Michael

The collection includes several files of genealogical information about the Brown and allied families, particularly the forebears of Mary Evelyn Brown (nee Miller) in the Miller family and the family of her mother, Mary Lucas Miller (nee Michael). These files include family correspondence, news clippings, and some formally compiled family histories. In addition, the collection includes photographs of members of the Miller family and a few of the Michael family.

Among the papers of Medford Jennings Brown Sr. are several items pertaining to his mother’s forebears in the Lamb family. These consist of a journal, a letter, a receipt, and some Confederate banknotes. There is also one identified photograph of Anna Estelle (Lamb) Brown.

Scope and content note

The collection consists of the combined family papers of Charles Stuart Brown and his wife Margaret Maitland Brown (nee Houston), and their son, Bruce Maitland Brown. The papers include those created and/or collected by Mr. and Mrs. Brown themselves, their son Bruce, and many other members of their respective families over a period spanning six generations. The collection ranges in date from 1806 through 2020. The bulk of the material dates from the 1880s through the 1970s.

The collection is broadly organized into four series. Series 1 (1806-2020) contains the textual materials, such as correspondence, vital records, financial documents, memorial books, travel journals, and extensive clippings. The material is divided into subseries by family (Houston and Brown). Series 2 (1860s-2017) consists of photographs of the Houston, Brown, and Miller families. These include tintypes, prints, negatives, and slides. Noteworthy are two boxes of art photographs by Charles Stuart Brown and the early 20th century photos of Elkhorn and Welch, West Virginia. Series 3 (1900s-1994) contains the scrapbooks of several generations of the Brown family. Series 4 (1857-1996) consists of the miscellaneous materials of the collection, including works of art including daguerreotypes, audio and video tapes, artifacts, and miscellaneous papers.

SERIES 1. TEXTUAL MATERIALS

Subseries 1.A. Houston family

The papers relating to the Houston family include materials dating from the lifetime of Margaret Brown’s great-grandparents Charles Boone and Maggie (Hathaway) Houston, through those of her grandparents Howard H. and Nellie (Maitland) Houston and her parents, Charles Boone II and Pauline (Smith) Houston. Note that papers relating to Margaret Brown’s childhood are filed as part of the Brown family papers.

In addition to the papers in the textual materials section of the collection, there are many photographs of members of the Houston and allied families. All but a few of these are black and white. They include numerous cartes de visite, tintypes, and four unidentified daguerreotypes.

Charles B. Houston I

These papers include the bulk of the earliest-dated material in the collection (with the exception of a few items from the Lamb family). It consists of the papers of C. B. Houston I and his wife Maggie. It contains much information about C. B. Houston’s siblings and their descendants, several of whom were business partners in a variety of coal-producing properties and related ventures in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. His brothers David Fleming Houston, John Houston, and Thomas James Houston are often named as partners in these ventures. Among the most interesting materials are C. B. Houston’s letterpress books, dating from 1886 to 1902, and a variety of stock certificates.

These papers also include some of the personal papers of his brother David Fleming Houston, which were received as part of his estate. In addition, there are materials relating to the estates of Maggie Houston’s sister Tillie Hathaway and her mother, Margaret (Hull) Hathaway, as well as those of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Houston themselves.

Other important materials in this subgroup were found in various Bibles belonging to the Houston and Hathaway families. The Bibles themselves sometimes contain family record pages which list births, marriages, and deaths. There were also several loose items found between the pages of these volumes, including correspondence and printed ephemera. Perhaps the most interesting of these items is a letter written by a Confederate soldier describing the Battle of Gettysburg.

Additional items of interest are the minutes books of two local organizations. The first volume records the constitution, membership, and minutes of the National Union League of Christiana, Pennsylvania, from 1863 to 1864. Both C. B. Houston and his brother David are listed as members of the League. The second volume records the minutes of the Christiana Lyceum from 1853 to 1859. It should be noted that both of these volumes are in poor condition; the latter was used as a child’s scrapbook.

Other Members of the Houston Family

The largest single group of materials relating to other members of C. B. Houston’s family is the papers of his brother Colonel David Fleming Houston. This material is comprised of both his business and personal correspondence, primarily during the 1880s. Of particular interest are his military pension record, correspondence relating to his political career, as well as his life insurance records, and stock certificates.

Howard H. Houston

The papers of C. B. Houston’s elder son, Howard Hathaway Houston, provide additional information about the family businesses. The most extensive of these records consists of his correspondence with his brother Thomas Edgar Houston. Howard Houston served as mayor of Chester, Pennsylvania, from 1902 to 1904. His papers include a letterpress book from his administration as mayor and numerous news clippings relating to his election. These papers also contain some information about the house which he built in Nether Providence, near Chester, known as “Houstonia.”

Charles B. Houston II

The papers of Howard’s only child, Charles B. Houston II provide further information about the family’s finances as well as more personal correspondence. These papers also include information about the sale of the house “Houstonia.” However, there is relatively little personal correspondence.

There is somewhat more such material among the papers of his wife, Pauline, and her sister, Eleanor. Both were interested in genealogy, and the collection includes their applications to the Daughters of teh American Revolution. There are also three paintings of related family crests (see Series 4), all by Virginia Smith Weidman.

The collection contains an autograph album belonging to their maternal grandmother, Margaret Victoria Grove (nee Chesnut). Related materials include items found in the Grove, Smith, and Houston family Bibles. There is also a scrapbook kept by Eleanor containing photographs and news clippings.

Subseries 1.B. Brown family

The papers relating to the Brown family consist primarily of the papers of Medford Jennings Brown, Sr., his son Charles Stuart Brown, and his grandson Bruce Maitland Brown. The C. S. Brown and Bruce M. Brown papers form the largest sub-groups in the collection. Related papers are those of Margaret Brown and some of the early papers of their sons Bruce M. Brown and Stuart H. Brown.

Medford Jennings Brown Sr.

Among Medford Brown Sr.’s papers are some materials relating to his forebears in the Lamb family, which include the earliest item in the collection. That document acknowledges receipt of a bequest of an enslaved woman and is dated 1806. Another item of special interest is the journal of Charles W. Lamb, which concerns his trip on the Barque Kirkland. This volume also contains other segments written in several hands and ranges in date from 1854 to 1864. Several Confederate banknotes were found among the pages of the journal.

Mr. and Mrs. Medford Brown’s personal papers include legal documents, some materials relating to their children, and items found in the Bibles owned by Evelyn Miller Brown and her sister, Lelia Miller. There are also compilations of genealogical data concerning the Lamb, Brown, and allied families, particularly Evelyn Brown’s forebears in the Michael and Miller families.

Charles Stuart Brown

These materials comprise the largest single subgroup within the collection. They contain some items relating to his childhood, including his baby book and early school records. His years as a student at Episcopal Academy and later at Williams College are well documented, and most of his yearbooks are present. The collection also contains various of his personal and business correspondence, including files relating to his career at the American Viscose Corporation (later Avisco). Additional files among his papers include those relating to his activities on behalf of Riddle Memorial Hospital and his chairmanships of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's 10,000 Trees Campaign during the mid-1970s.

His photographic work comprises a large proportion of the photographic materials section of the collection. His hobby as a competitive grower of dahlias is also documented.

Mr. and Mrs. Brown were inveterate scrapbook keepers. Their school years and the first ten years of their married life are richly chronicled among the scrapbooks section of the collection.

The 1996 additions to the collection include C. Stuart Brown’s travel diaries from the 1970s and 1980s and appointment calendars from the 1960s to 1991.

Margaret Maitland (Houston) Brown

This material consists in part of items relating to Margaret Brown’s childhood, including her baby book (which is identical to her husband’s, who was born in the same year). As a youngster, she may have shared her future husband’s interest in stamp collecting, as there are three early albums which appear to have been hers. Her papers also include a small amount of correspondence and a scrapbook of her school years.

Bruce Maitland Brown

There are relatively few papers of “Marty” and C. Stuart Brown’s two sons in this collection contributed by C. S. Brown. These relate primarily to their childhood and young adulthood and were undoubtedly kept by their parents. The papers of Bruce M. Brown include medical records of his infancy, some of his school papers, issues of a family newsletter, which he created, called “The Shady Hill News,” and various news clippings. There are also numerous photographs of him, the majority taken by his father. Related materials include audio tapes of his radio broadcasts while at Lawrence University.

Additionional materials were processed in 1996, and the largest coherent subseries within this added material is the correspondence between Bruce M. Brown and his parents. It should be noted that these folders contain other related materials as well as the letters. These related items include printed ephemera, copies of letters to others, and letters from friends and relatives of Bruce Brown. This arrangement retains the original order of these materials as they were first kept by the Brown family. School records from Episcopal Academy and Lawrence University are also included.

A large box of Bruce Brown’s correspondence was transferred from Collection #4342 HBE Foundation records. As above, original order and groupings were maintained during processing. These letters include correspondence with friends and family from the 1960s through the 1980s.

Stuart Houston Brown

The papers of Stuart H. Brown kept by his father include a few school papers, a list of the wedding gifts he received, and some news clippings, primarily related to his marriage and the births of his children. There are more photos taken of Stuart Brown as a child than of any other individual in the collection.

SERIES 2. PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS

There are studio portraits of virtually all principal members of the Houston and Brown families represented in this collection. These date from the lifetime of Charles B. Houston I and continue through the early adulthood of C. S. Brown’s children.

In addition, home photography became an interest of both the Houston and Brown families. Howard H. Houston, Charles B. Houston II, and Medford J. Brown Sr. each created extensive collections of candid photographs, some complied in scrapbooks. C. Stuart Brown continued this tradition, making it a lifelong hobby and at one point in his career, a business.

As is typical of family photo collections, relatively few of these images were labeled to identify subjects, place, or time. Given these limitations, a surprisingly high percentage of these photographs could be identified to one degree or another by deduction. For example, there is a striking resemblance between the members of the family of Charles B. Houston I. Two group portraits of C. B. Houston’s family were particularly helpful in this regard. Other factors such as the photographs’ format and condition and their context among the other papers were relied upon to assist identification.

The Houston material includes the only four daguerreotypes in the collection. This group also includes five highly unusual modern photographs produced on milk glass. Because of the physical needs of these fragile formats, they have been housed with the artifacts.

Houston family

In addition to many loose photographs, the unprocessed Houston family papers included two handsome but badly deteriorated photo albums. These were dismantled to give the images optimum care. Both of the albums included tintypes as well as numerous cartes de visite; and one contained a few cyanotypes.

As adults, Charles B. Houston I and his family had many studio portraits taken. There is a strong family resemblance among members of this generation. There is only one photo in the collection which clearly includes a member of the previous generation. This is the group photograph of the Houstons featuring Nellie and her infant son Howard (circa 1861). The elderly woman in that image is unidentified, but is most probably either Mrs. John Houston (nee Boone, who died circa 1870) or Mrs. Philip Hathaway (who died in 1896).

Formal portraits were also taken of Charles B. Houston I’s children from infancy through adulthood. While some formal portraits of his grandchildren also exist, by that time studio photographs had begun to be supplanted by home photography. In their middle age, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Houston toured the country by automobile, taking numerous candid photos along the way.

There are a number of unidentified photographs of the allied Maitland family, which came into the Houston family records through Mrs. Howard H. Houston (nee Nellie Maitland). Only one of these, clearly a childhood photograph of Nellie, has any identification. It is captioned “Maitland.” This and one other were taken in Chicago. All the rest, however, were taken in Nellie Maitland Houston’s home town of Negaunee, Michigan, or the nearby towns of Ishpeming and Marquette.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Houston II took extensive home photographs of themselves, their friends and family, and especially of their daughter Margaret (“Marty”). In addition to numerous loose photos, they kept two scrapbooks, primarily recording their daughter’s life. These photos were most numerous during her first five years, becoming increasingly fewer as she grew to adulthood, but continuing to the birth of her first child.

Brown family

This group consists of the photographs of the Medford J. Brown and C. Stuart Brown families. Photos of the Medford Jennings Brown Sr. family include several formal portraits taken while the family was still young, but a far larger number of candid photos. Just like their son Stuart’s future in-laws (Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Houston II), the Browns concentrated their home photography on their three children: Medford Jr., Stuart, and Helen. These are so numerous that the majority are arranged by year from 1917 to 1922. Then there is a gap to 1930.

The photographs taken (and to a lesser extent collected) by C. Stuart Brown comprise a large proportion of the total of the photographic materials in this collection. His photo scrapbooks date from 1928, when he was 13 years old. These extensively document his friends, family, and other interests during his years at Episcopal Academy and Williams College. He photographed numerous special occasions (including the weddings of his sister and brother) and his travels (including summer camp, adult camping trips, cruises, and numerous vacations). The most voluminously photographed subjects in the collection are his children, Stuart (“Tony”) and Bruce. Related photographic materials will also be found among the scrapbooks section of the collection.

In addition to all these subjects, Mr. Brown was an “art photographer.” He mounted and titled many of his works for competitive exhibition. Several of these can be identified from other images in the collection. There are also numerous unidentified and unmounted enlargements of his work.

Miller family

The numerous photographs of members of the Miller and allied families were brought into the Brown family records by Mrs. Medford J. Brown Sr. (nee Mary Evelyn Miller). Filed with these are snapshots from the photo albums kept by Evelyn Brown in her later years.

SERIES 3. SCRAPBOOKS

Scrapbooks which contained only photographs were placed among the other photographic materials in the collection. Several of these were in such poor condition that they were dismantled and their contents individually processed. Regardless of condition, the total contents of each photo scrapbook were kept together as a single entity, rather than scattered according to subject.

All other scrapbooks in the collection were compiled by Mr. and Mrs. C. Stuart Brown and their son Bruce. The only scrapbook compiled by Mrs. Brown prior to her marriage pertains to her school years (circa 1932 – 1934). In addition to several photo scrapbooks, C. Stuart Brown kept extensive scrapbooks of his years at Williams College (1933 – 1937). And for the first ten years of their marriage, the Browns kept a series of scrapbooks documenting their leisure activities, social life, and family events. Bruce kept a series of similar but much larger scrapbooks spanning 1962-1975.

Each of these scrapbooks is filled with programs, ticket stubs, news clippings, invitations and announcements, holiday and other occasional cards, memorabilia, and photographs taken by Mr. Brown at parties, weddings, and on their vacations.

One of the most frequently documented activities in these scrapbooks is the Browns’ attendance at professional and repertory theaters in Philadelphia. These performances featured many of the nationally prominent actors and actresses of the day; there is also a program for the opening of the film Gone with the Wind. The Browns also attended many sporting events, including tennis, jai-alai, horse races, and collegiate football matches, particularly those of the University of Pennsylvania.

SERIES 4. MISCELLANEOUS MATERIAL

Subseries 4.A. Artifacts

The collection includes numerous small to mid-size artifacts. These consist primarily of medallions, ribbons, and badges earned as prizes by C. Stuart Brown at Episcopal Academy, Camp Keoka, Green Hill Farms, and Camp Tecumseh.

Subseries 4.B. Artistic Works

Most of these works were produced by Margaret Brown, including watercolor paintings, pen-and-ink drawings, one cartoon, and one oil painting. There are three paintings of family crests by Virginia Smith Weidman and a drawing in pastels of young Stuart H. Brown by Nancy Whitaker. Additoinally, there are several works by Priscilla Huston. The collection also includes three paintings encased in oval frames; each is based on a photograph. Due to their unusual format, these are housed with the artifacts.

Subseries 4.C. Audio and video recordings

This collection contains a total of 21 reel-to-reel audio tapes. These include Lawrence University broadcasts featuring Bruce M. Brown and a number of personal and business-related tapes produced by C. Stuart Brown. There are also two cassette tapes. One of these cassettes is a 90-minute interview with Charles Stuart Brown, conducted by Mark Frazer Lloyd on August 29, 1992. There is also one video cassette related to wilderness preservation in Nether Providence, Pennsylvania.

Subseries 4.C. Audio and video recordings

This subseries contains the collection’s artifacts. These include C. Stuart Brown’s ribbons and medals from school and camp athletic competitions the dahlia shows of his adulthood. Many partially filled coin books and other collectible coins are also present. Additionally, there are a couple of pocket watches and baby rattles.

Philadelphia, PA, 19107

Revision Description

Finding aid updated to include recent accruals and material that had not been incorprated into the main collection , 2022.

Provenance

Gifts of Bruce M. Brown, 2019; and Carter H. Brown, 2021.

Accession numbers 2019.078, 2021.044.

Processing note

In 1994, 58 boxes of the Brown family papers were processed and described. Additional materials were processed in 1996, bringing the collection to 70 boxes and 16 volumes. Most of this material was not integrated with the whole. A very few items were added to existing folders. Another 15 unprocessed boxes and three large scrapbooks were included with the 2019 donation to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The processed portion of the collection was largely left unaltered. A few related folders were added to boxes and oversized items were moved to containers of appropriate size. Volumes were removed from boxes and folders were shifted in order to keep boxes filled. In surveying the HBE Foundation records, which were received with the Brown family papers, one large box of personal papers belonging to Bruce M. Brown was found. In processing that collection, a few other clearly personal paperswere found interfiled. These papers have been processed with the Brown family papers as a separate section (boxes 63-68). The biographical and scope and content notes from the original finding aid have been incorporated here with light edits for clarity and updates for new content. A copy of the original finding aid has been bound and is now part of the collection (volume 92).

Three items listed in the original finding aid were not present when the collection was inventoried at HSP. The missing items are the two cassette recordings of interviews with Medford J. Brown Jr. in 1994 and a 1980 Philadelphia Inquirer supplement, “Champions of the World.”

Two newspapers have been discarded. These are the Philadelphia Inquirer for September 2, 1947, and the  Evening Bulletin for September 2, 1947. These publications are readily available online.

Most of the collection is musty, and extensive mold remediation is planned. Researchers should exercise caution when handling materials from this collection.

Please note that ccasional instances of racist and anti-semitic content and language were observed in collection materials during processing.

The six very large scrapbooks belonging to Bruce M. Brown (Volumes 85-90) may require extra time to page.

2. Photographic materials (1860s - 2017)

Scope and content note

This series consists of most of the photographs in the collection, including photo scrapbooks. Framed photos, daguerreotypes, and photos on milk glass are included with the artifacts in series 4. Subseries 2.A. contains photos belonging to the Houston family and allied families. These include portraits, travel photos, and pictures of Houston-owned coal and coke operations. A disbound photo scrapbook on grey paper entitled “Faces and Places,” was compiled by Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Houston II. Most of the pictures are of their daughter Margaret, but other subjects appear, including family and friends. A small number of photos belonging to Cherry Mae Dowdell Davis are at the end of the subseries.  Subseries 2.B. contains photos belonging to four generations of the Brown family and allied families, except the Miller family. These include many photos taken by Charles Stuart Brown, who was a professional photographer for a period of time.  Subseries 2.C. consists of photos belonging to the Miller and allied families, including Edwards and Allen.

A. Houston family photographs (1860s - 1973)

Scope and content note

Charles B. Houston I and his family had many studio portraits taken. Formal portraits were also taken of Charles B. Houston I’s children from infancy through adulthood. In their middle age, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Houston toured the country by automobile, taking numerous candid photos along the way. There are a number of unidentified photographs of the allied Maitland family, which came into the Houston family records through Nellie Maitland Houston. Only one of these, clearly a childhood photograph of Nellie, has any identification. Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Houston II took extensive home photographs of themselves, their friends and family, and especially of their daughter Margaret (“Marty”). These photos were most numerous during her first five years, becoming increasingly fewer as she grew to adulthood, but continuing to the birth of her first child.

B. Brown family photographs (1911 - 2017)

Scope and content note

The photographs taken (and to a lesser extent collected) by C. Stuart Brown comprise a large proportion of the total of the photographic materials in this collection. His photo scrapbooks date from 1928, when he was 13 years old. These extensively document his friends, family, and other interests during his years at Episcopal Academy and Williams College. He photographed numerous special occasions (including the weddings of his sister and brother) and his travels (including summer camp, adult camping trips, cruises, and numerous vacations). In addition to all these subjects, Mr. Brown was an “art photographer.” He mounted and titled many of his works for competitive exhibition. Several of these can be identified from other images in the collection. There are also numerous unidentified and unmounted enlargements of his work.

3. Scrapbooks (early 1900s - 1994)

Scope and content note

Series 3 consists of the non-photographic scrapbooks in the collection. The earliest was compiled by Pauline Smith Houston’s sister, Eleanor Smith Beyer. All other scrapbooks in the collection were compiled by Mr. and Mrs. C. Stuart Brown, and their son, Bruce M. Brown. The only scrapbook compiled by Margaret Houston Brown prior to her marriage pertains to her school years (circa 1932–1934). In addition to several photo scrapbooks, C. Stuart Brown kept extensive scrapbooks of his years at Williams College (1933–1937). And for the first ten years of their marriage, the Browns kept a series of scrapbooks documenting their leisure activities, social life, and family events. Each of these scrapbooks is filled with programs, ticket stubs, news clippings, invitations and announcements, holiday and other occasional cards, memorabilia, and photographs taken by Mr. Brown at parties, weddings, and on their vacations. Bruce M. Brown kept similar but larger scrapbooks from adolescence through early adulthood (1962-1975). The final scrapbook is one kept by Bruce M. Brown and Elaine Eldredge Brown for their son Carter Houston Brown (1993-1994).
