- Abstract
- Orvan K. Judd and Emily Sweetland of Buffalo, New York, had eight children. Daughter Carrie Judd Montgomery was a well-known author and faith healer, who eventually settled in California with her husband. In 1887, daughter Sarah Aurelia (“Birdie”) married Joseph Newton Crocker (1863-1943), manager of mail and express traffic for the New York Central system, and in 1888, she gave birth to Alford McClellan Crocker. After Birdie died in 1889, her sister Eva (1866-1945) cared for infant Alford. Eva and Joseph Crocker married in 1890 and subsequently had two daughters: Emilie (1892-1980) and Josephine. Alford worked as a pharmacist and door-to-door salesman, but suffered from low vision and mental illness. Emilie Crocker worked as a teacher until she married Carl Stuart Williams (1886-1978) in 1916. Carl Williams worked as an organic chemist at the U. S. Rubber Company, Perth Amboy Chemical works, and later DuPont’s Deepwater, New Jersey, plant. Emilie and Carl had four children: Stuart Crocker (1917-1929), Kingsley Grant (1921-2001), Glen, and Eleanor. Kingsley graduated from Lehigh University and spent his entire career working for the Naval Research Laboratories in Washington, DC. He married Jeannette Church Earle (1920-1996) in November 1942. The couple had four children together: Stuart, Caroline, Donna, and Judd. Jeannette’s father was Navy Captain Fred Martin Earle (1890-1975), the first commanding officer of the U. S. Naval Drydocks, Terminal Island, California. Fred Earle and his wife were eye witnesses to the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Jeannette’s brother, Frank Nichols Earle (1918-2003) was a marine draftsman and electrical engineer. This large collection documents several generations of the Crocker, Williams, and Earle families, along with the related Judd, Nichols, Greene, and Dyer families of New York; New Jersey; Ohio; Washington, DC; and California. Contents include extensive correspondence, genealogies and family history material, photographs and albums, scrapbooks, diaries, school and church papers, military papers, and printed matter.

Background note
Eva Judd (1866-1945) was the youngest daughter of the eight children of Orvan K. Judd and his wife Emily Sweetland Judd. Her elder sister, Carrie Judd Montgomery, was a well-known author and faith healer, who eventually settled in California with her husband. Eva’s sister Sarah Aurelia (“Birdie”) (1850-1889) married Joseph Newton Crocker (1863-1943) in 1887, and in 1888, she gave birth to Alford McClellan Crocker. Birdie died in January 1888, and Eva stepped in to care for her infant nephew. Alford suffered from ophthalmia in infancy, which severely affected his vision. As an adult, Alford worked as a pharmacist and later as a door-to-door salesman in New Jersey. He also struggled with mental illness throughout his adult life. In 1890, Eva Judd married Joseph Crocker, who worked as a manager of mail and express traffic for the New York Central system. The couple had two daughters Emilie (1892-1980) and Josephine. Emilie Crocker worked as a teacher until she married Carl Stuart Williams (1886-1978) in 1916. Because of her brother’s illness, Emilie developed a lifelong interest in mental health matters and was active in the Mental Hygiene Society of New Jersey and the National Mental Health Foundation, Inc. Carl Williams worked as an organic chemist at the U. S. Rubber Company, Perth Amboy Chemical works, and later DuPont’s Deepwater, New Jersey, plant, and he was awarded a number of patents related to rubber processing. His hobbies included cutting and setting gems and making stained glass windows. Emilie and Carl had four children: Stuart Crocker (1917-1929), Kingsley Grant (1921-2001), Glen, and Eleanor. Kingsley was recruited by the Naval Research Laboratories in Washington, DC, three days after his graduation from Lehigh University. While with the NRL, he worked on testing chemicals for protection of clothing from mustard gas and was involved in testing the atmosphere to insure the habitability of the USS Nautilus, the world’s first operational nuclear-powered submarine. Kingsley married Jeannette Church Earle ("Jan")(1920-1996) in November 1942. The couple had four children together: Stuart, Caroline, Donna, and Judd. Jeannette’s father was Navy captain Fred Martin Earle (1890-1975), the first commanding officer of the US Naval Drydocks, Terminal Island, California. Her mother was Lucy Nichols Earle (1895-1977), who attended Simmons College in Boston as a young woman and later went to nursing school after separation and divorce from her husband. Fred Earle and his second wife, Icy M. Earle, were eye witnesses to the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Jeannette’s brother, Frank Nichols Earle (1918-2003) was a marine draftsman and electrical engineer.
Scope and content note
This expansive collection documents several generations of the Crocker, Williams, and Earle families, along with the related Judd, Nichols, Green(e), and Dyer families, of New York, New Jersey, Ohio, California, and Pennsylvania. Contents include but are not limited to extensive correspondence; genealogies and family history material; photographs, including some cased photographs, and photograph albums and tintypes; scrapbooks, diaries, and calendars; vital and military records; school and church papers; papers relating to local and national mental health organizations in the mid-20th century, including the Mental Hygiene Society of New Jersey and the National Mental Health Foundation, Inc., Philadelphia; and printed matter.
Series 1, Crocker and Judd families (1814-1989, undated), contains the papers of individuals of several generations related to Emilie Williams Crocker, who married Carl Stuart Williams. The family of Eva Judd Crocker (mother of Emilie) is particularly well represented with small amounts of correspondence, autograph books, diaries, and miscellaneous papers from all of Eva’s siblings plus her parents. Carrie Judd Montgomery’s papers consist of correspondence, poems, an autograph book, photographs, religious literature, and clippings. The series also contains diaries, correspondence, certificates, miscellaneous papers, and photographs from Joseph Newton Crocker and Alford Crocker.
Series 2, Williams and Greene families (1848-2023, undated), consists primarily of the papers of Carl Stuart Williams; Carl’s wife Emilie Crocker Williams; their son, Kingsley Grant Williams; and Kingsley’s wife Jeannette Earle Williams. Correspondence forms a large portion of the series, but professional papers, diaries, certificates, autobiographical writings, children’s papers, and church papers are also present. Jeannette Earle Williams was a dedicated scrapbook maker, and her efforts document decades of her and her family’s lives. Emilie Crocker Williams devoted herself to mental health causes, and there are several folders of related papers (Box 88 folders 5-8, Box 89 folders 1-4). There are many family photographs and albums dating back to the late 1800s, including cased photographs and tintypes. Additionally, there are some family papers and genealogical materials of the antecedent Williams and Green(e) families.
Series 3, Earle, Nichols, and Dyer families (1864-2003, undated), contains the papers of Fred Martin Earle; his son, Frank Nichols Earle; his first wife, Lucy Nichols Earle; his second wife, Icy Manchester Barclay Earle; his mother, Minnie Church Earle Ellis; and some papers of the Nichols and Dyer families. There are extensive correspondence, financial papers, diaries, journals, professional papers, vital records, notes, clippings, scrapbooks, photographs, and miscellaneous personal papers. Fred Earle’s papers particularly contain papers related to his naval career and accounts of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 (Box 120 folder 5). The Terminal Island documents of Fred Earle contain information on employment of women and racial minorities in the naval yard during World War II, with photographs of women at work. Icy M. Earle’s papers include her account of the attack on Pearl Harbor and documents related to her own work at the ship yards (Box 134 folders 6-7). Lucy Earle’s papers include patient notes (closed to researchers for 75 years from the date of creation). The series also contains papers, genealogical materials, scrapbooks, and photographs of the antecedent Nichols and Dyer families.
Series 4, Books (1877 - circa 1960, undated), consists of an eclectic mix of books. These include children’s books, fiction, verse, academic subjects, bibles, and books of common prayer. One notable item is Joseph Crocker’s copy of the Parallel Bible from 1885 (Volume 103).

Series 3. Earle, Nichols, and Dyer families (1864-2003, undated)Scope and content noteThis series contains the papers of Fred Martin Earle; his son, Frank Nichols Earle; his first wife, Lucy Nichols Earle; his second wife, Icy Manchester Barclay Earle; his mother, Minnie Church Earle Ellis; and some papers of the Nichols and Dyer families. |
