- Abstract
- John Clayton (1819-1881) was a lawyer who practiced in the city of Philadelphia. He was born 29 June 1819 in Kent County, Delaware, to Captain James Clayton and Sarah Medford Clayton. In 1837, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and later a degree in law. Clayton married Anna Colton Baldwin, daugher of Mary Ross Baldwin and Oren Colton. Anna C. Baldwin had been adopted by Matthias W. Baldwin, founder of the Baldwin Locomotive Works. John and Anna Clayton had three surviving children. John Clayton died in 1881 at the age of 62. The collections contains family and business papers of John Clayton; letters of his mother, Sarah Medford Clayton; letters of his wife, Anny Colton Baldwin Clayton; and some miscellaneous papers including a few Civil War papers of Colonel Richard R. Woolworth, a distant relative of Anna B. Clayton.

Scope and content note
This small collection contains family and business papers of John Clayton, Philadelphia lawyer, including: letters, 1832-1848, of his mother Sarah Medford Clayton; letters, 1842-1851, of his wife Anna Colton Clayton, many of them mentioning her adoptive father Matthias W. Baldwin, founder of the Baldwin Locomotive Works; record book of legal fees charged, 1841-1881; and incoming business letters and papers, 1877-1879. Additionally, there is a Civil War muster roll and pay roll, belonging to Colonel Richard R.Woolworth (distant relative of Anna B. Clayton); some testimonial dinner programs from the Gilpin family (related by marriage through the Clayton's eldest daughter); and two partial booklets of religious notes and lectures, author unidentified.
