Abstract

Lois Elaine Dare (1930-2010) of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, worked much of her life as an insurance underwriter for companies such as Hartford, Chubb, and Reliance. She attended Abington High School and graduated from Penn State University. Her parents were Howard Townsend Dare (1898-1958) and June Taylor Attwood (1902-1984), and she had a brother, Harrison Dare (1920-1991). While Howard Dare was alive, the family lived at a spacious estate called "White Gates" in Rydal, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Howard Dare served with the Marine Corps during World War I, and Harrison Dare served with the Army during World War II.

The Lois Dare family history collection focuses on the genealogies of the Dare and related families, and the papers are housed in one box, one volumes, and one flat file. The box (Box 1) contains photocopies of genealogical records, notes, clippings, and other papers on the Dare, Townsend, McCalmont (Mac Calmont), Everts, and Buchanan families. The flat file (Flat File 1) contains large family charts and data, as well as an original naturalization certificate for Charles Frederick Everts (born 1816) and a certificate of recognition of his son Fred Everts (1839-1920) for his service during the Civil War. Using these materials, Dare was able to trace her family's history back to 17th century England and Ireland. She compiled some of her findings into a scrapbook, "Ancestral Record" (Volume 1), which contains a plethora of family data, photographs, vital records, correspondence, deeds, amps, and other notes all on or from various family members. Dare finished the scrapbook in 1984, and most of the items date from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s.

The papers in Box 1, Folders 1-11, were originally in two 3-ring binders. The papers were removed from the binders and placed in folders in the order found. The titles of the folders were taken from labeled tabs that were in the binders.
