Abstract
Spencer Ervin Jr. (1886-1967) of Bala Cynwyd was a lawyer, author, and Anglican Church historian. During his lifetime, he served as a deputy to the General Convention from the Diocese of Pennsylvania, secretary of the Standing Liturgical Commission, and secretary of the Historical Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He also authored three books on legal subjects, and several articles and a series of books on Anglican polity and history. Ervin married twice, the second time to Miriam W. Roberts (1888-1989), who was the daughter of George Brooke Roberts (1883-1897), president of the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1890 to 1906. This collection is comprised of family history files on the Ervin and related Mudge, Roberts, Desher, and Albright families; late 19th and early 20th century journals and travel diaries of George B. Roberts and Miriam W. Roberts; family correspondence, copies of Spencer Ervin's various published works; clippings; and scattered vital records (copies and originals).

Background note

Spencer Ervin Jr. (1886-1967) of Bala Cynwyd was a lawyer, author, and Anglican Church historian. He was born in Philadelphia to  Katharine Mudge (1845-1887) and  Spencer Ervin Sr. (1856-1897), an investment broker. His mother died before his second birthday, and his father married  Adele Locke Gilpin (1864-1948) the next year. The death of Spencer Sr. in 1887 left his son in the care of his stepmother. Spencer Ervin Jr. was educated at St. Mark’s School in Massachusetts and then Harvard Univeristy, graduating in 1908 and completing a degree in law in 1910. After a year abroad, he was admitted to the bar and took employment as a clerk at a Philadelphia law firm. He married his first wife, Virginia Rodman in 1916. The couple moved to Madrid, Spain, in 1917 when Ervin took a job with the War Trade Board under the Department of State. His wife and their child died in childbirth in November 1918. Ervin then returned to the United States, and in 1920, he started his own legal practice. In 1922, he married  Miriam W. Roberts (1888-1989), who was the daughter of  George Brooke Roberts (1883-1897), president of the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1890 to 1906. The couple had six children together.

Ervin began writing on legal issues in the mid 1920s, ultimately publishing three books. In the early 1930s, he took a position with the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, where he remained until 1942. At that time, he turned his attention to studying and writing about Anglican history and polity. He published articles and a series of books on Anglican polity. During the latter part of his career, he also served as a deputy to the General Convention from the Diocese of Pennsylvania, secretary of the Standing Liturgical Commission, and secretary of the Historical Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church.
