- Abstract
- Philadelphian Ebenezer Hazard (1744-1817) was U. S. postmaster general from 1782-1789 and an historian that advocated publication of public records and manuscripts. This collection consists primarily of the correspondence and papers of Ebenezer Hazard and his son, Samuel Hazard (1784-1870), once curator at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and author of Annals of Pennsylvania, from the Discovery of the Delaware, 1609-82 (1850). Among the items are journals of Ebenezer Hazard, 1770-1771, 1772-1773, 1777-1778 (Box 7); journals of Samuel Hazard, 1806-1813 (Box 7); medical recipe book of Samuel Hazard, 1818 (Box 7); and correspondence of Samuel Hazard, including letters of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington; and the history of the Philadelphia Hose Company. Also in the collection are Samuel Hazard's drafts for the Annals of Pennsylvania. These manuscripts have been collected into three portfolios, which have been foldered together in Boxes 1-3. Correspondence of both Ebenezer and Samuel has been arranged alphabetically by author in Boxes 4-6.
