Scope and content note

Mary R. P. Henszey (1879-1964) was a schoolteacher in New York City before opening her own school in Ambler, Pennsylvania from approximately 1929-1935. The collection traces her work as an educator through early writings that include poems, sketchbooks, school essays, teaching notes from 1903-1904, and Miss Henszey’s weaving and paper cutout sample book, circa 1904. Her teaching diplomas from 1905 and 1906 mark the beginning of her professional life as an educator. Pamphlets from Miss Henszey’s school in Ambler provide insight into the typical curriculum of a small private school in the early 1930s.

The older materials in this collection document many of Mary R. P. Henszey’s Quaker ancestors, primarily on her maternal side. These include the Jobsons, Cockburns, Lukens, and Budds. There are original marriage certificates for the following couples: Joseph Budd and Rebecca Worrell, 1776; Charles Jobson and Rebecca Budd, 1810; James Cockburn and Rebecca Jobson, 1825; Joseph Jobson and Mary C. Lukens, 1853; Samuel A. Henszey and Laura Jobson (Mary R. P. Henszey’s parents), 1877; and Winfield Godshalk and Mary B. Jobson, 1888. Other manuscripts and documents include teaching diplomas for Laura R. Jobson (1872-1873), the Last Will and Testament of Abraham Lukens (1818), the birth certificate and discharge papers for William Harlan Henszey (Mary R. P. Henszey’s brother), the Will of Mary E. Jobson (1915), and a collection of legal documents for the Lukens family. Charles Jobson (1787-1818) kept a diary circa 1805-1820; Mary Budd, Miss Henszey’s great aunt, kept a diary during her schooldays at Westtown from 1799-1800. The collection includes Joseph Jobson’s receipt book (1867-1882), Laura Jobson’s photograph album, circa 1860-1870 (tintypes of family and friends), and some additional unidentified photographs. Printed materials include Burke, B. W. “A Compendium of the Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology of the Horse,” (Humphreys; Philadelphia, 1806, with Charles Jobson and Jacob Jobson’s names inscribed); Friends Miscellany Volume 7 (1835) and 11 (1838) with Rebecca Cockburn’s name inscribed on the title page; and Bywater’s Philadelphia Business Directory and City Guide for the Year 1850. Two family bibles were removed from the collection after pages with family notes were preserved with the collection. There is an all-in-one genealogical chart (Box 2, Folder 20) that highlights those in the family who are significantly represented by material in this collection.
