In 1918 in Reading, Pennsylvania, approximately ten men and women of known Huguenot descent founded The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania, one of the first societies for the descendants of Huguenots established in the United States. They settled on April 13, 1918 (the 320th anniversary of the Edict of Nantes) for their first official meeting, and set out to write a charter, find interested members, and decide upon the organization's structure. At this meeting, they developed a set of objectives for the organization, which included perpetuating and maintaining the history, principles, and beliefs of the Huguenots; "publicly commemorating at stated times the principal events in the history of the Huguenot;" maintaining a library and museum of materials pertaining to Huguenots in America and specifically in Pennsylvania; promoting scholarly study of their history; and above all, celebrating and preserving the spirit of a people who withstood persecution and intolerance "because of their adherence to the basic tenets of the Protestant faith and their devotion to liberty."

<lb/>The collection consists primarily of membership applications, organized numerically by membership number assigned by the Society. The forms provide information on the member, such as spouse's name, occupation, educational history, and religious affiliation, as well as genealogical information on the member's family and connection to an established Huguenot line. The remainder of the collection consists of newspaper clippings and magazine articles about Huguenot communities in the United States and South Africa, other printed material, genealogical research notes, and a small number of administrative files and artifacts. The artifacts are all items used for Society publications and include metal printing plates and woodblocks.

<p>Huguenot immigrants began arriving in North America as early as the sixteenth century, establishing small communities in French Canada. As time progressed, and the relationship between the Protestant Huguenots and Catholic France became more tenuous, immigration to the colonies of British North America increased. Huguenot communities began to develop in North and South Carolina, Virginia, New York, and Pennsylvania. The British colonists quickly embraced this growing group of immigrants, which included many skilled craftsmen, professionals and nobility, and many became influential and important members of the communities in which they settled.</p>

<p>The Huguenots, not unlike many other groups immigrating to America at the time, were fleeing religious persecution. Their troubles with the Catholic French monarchy dated back to the French Wars of Religion in the mid- to late-sixteenth century, in which thousands of Huguenots were killed. The Wars were ended when Henry IV passed the Edict of Nantes on April 13, 1598, giving the French Protestants limited religious freedom. However, this uneasy peace was ended when Louis XIV revoked the Edict in October of 1685. This new wave of persecution and religious intolerance sparked a wave of Huguenot emigration from France to other parts of Europe, particularly the Palatinate area of Germany, the Netherlands, and Great Britain. It wasn't until the Promulgation of the Edict of Toleration in November of 1787 that it became safe for Huguenots to practice their religion in France. By then, however, many Huguenots had already settled in their new communities, not only in British North America, but also as far off as South Africa.</p>

<p>Approximately ten men and women of known Huguenot descent founded The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania, one of the first societies for the descendants of Huguenots established in the United States. They settled on April 13, 1918 (the 320th anniversary of the Edict of Nantes) for their first official meeting, and set out to write a charter, find interested members, and decide upon the organization's structure. At this meeting in Reading, Pennsylvania, they developed a group of objectives for the organization, which included perpetuating and maintaining the history, principles, and beliefs of the Huguenots; "publicly commemorating at stated times the principal events in the history of the Huguenot;" maintaining a library and museum of materials pertaining to Huguenots in America and specifically in Pennsylvania; promoting scholarly study of their history; and above all, celebrating and preserving the spirit of a people who withstood persecution and intolerance "because of their adherence to the basic tenets of the Protestant faith and their devotion to liberty." Some of their first official acts as an organization included making General John J. Pershing, a direct Huguenot descendant, an honorary member of the Society, and giving their symbolic support to the Republic of France in their "fight for democracy."</p>

<p>Along with developing objectives and tending to other orders of business, the new society established eligibility requirements for membership. In 1918, to be a member of The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania, one had to be a "descendant of the Huguenot families which emigrated [sic] to America prior to the promulgation of the Edict of Toleration, November 28, 1787," a representative of a French family whose "profession of the Protestant faith antedates the Edict of Toleration," or a person or scholar who had made Huguenots and their history his or her area of study. There was also a junior membership classification, in which one could apply as a minor, be exempted from dues, and promoted to senior membership on one's 18th birthday. Members frequently submitted applications for junior membership on behalf of their young children and grandchildren, helping to ensure the family's continued involvement in the Huguenot tradition.</p>

<p>In 1931, The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania, along with the societies from New Jersey and Washington D. C., formed the Federation of Huguenot Societies. The federation met annually in Washington, and by 1946, included societies from Ohio, California, Michigan, West Virginia, and North Carolina. In 1951, the federation officially changed its name to the National Huguenot Society, which today encompasses over forty state member societies. As the national organization grew, standards for all member societies were developed. Membership qualifications became more regularized and specific, and today there are several requirements for eligibility. The member must be at least 18 years old, identify as a member of the Protestant faith, "adhere to the Huguenot principles of faith and liberty," and be directly descended from either "a Huguenot, without regard to ethnic origin or adherence to any particular sect of Protestantism, who, subsequent to 10 December 1520 and prior to the promulgation on 28 November 1787 of the Edict of Toleration, emigrated from France to North America or some other country;" or "a Huguenot who, in spite of religious persecution, remained in France. 'France,' as used here, refers to any territory lying within the Kingdom of France on the date of the promulgation of the Edict of Toleration on 28 November 1787."</p>

<p>By the late 1960s, The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania's membership had grown to roughly 1000 members and its leadership felt that the size of the group combined with the distribution of members all over the state was becoming unmanageable. This feeling sparked a movement to establish chapters throughout the state to simplify administration of the Society. The Society also hoped that by encouraging local chapters, they could continue to base their operations and programming in the Philadelphia area without alienating members in other parts of the state. However, only two chapters were ever formed, the Jean Ribault chapter (covering the Harrisburg area), and the Languedoc chapter (covering the Pittsburgh area), both of which are minimally represented in this collection. Because of this limited response to the call for local chapters, many of the Society's members do not belong to either chapter, and remain members of the state society only.</p>

<p>Both the national and state organizations still exist today as active hereditary societies dedicated to the preservation of Huguenot history. The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania continues to celebrate the anniversaries of important events in Huguenot history, hold church services, and document genealogical lines of Huguenot descent. Similarly, the National Huguenot Society still maintains its role as a parent organization to the many state member societies, while actively encouraging the establishment of member societies in "states, territories of the United States, and the District of Columbia where none currently exist."</p>

<scopecontent>
<p>The records of The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania document their dedication to Huguenot history and genealogy. Most of the records illustrate a crucial aspect of any hereditary society: the process of admitting members. Approved membership applications, which are the bulk of this collection, are organized numerically by membership number assigned by the Society. The collection contains only one application that expressly states it was rejected by the Society, so little information on the applicant pool as a whole is available. There are approximately 3400 regular applications as well as roughly 300 junior applications. Applications provide information on the member, such as spouse's name, occupation, educational history, and religious affiliation, as well as genealogical information on the member's family and connection to an established Huguenot line. Many of the members are not residents of Pennsylvania, but choose to affiliate themselves with the Pennsylvania society because their first Huguenot ancestors to live in America settled in Pennsylvania. In addition, the collection contains handwritten indexes, scattered throughout the series, that cross-reference the membership number with the family names of both the applicant and the ancestors.</p>

<p>The <emph render="italic">Administrative</emph> series mostly contains reports of the president, treasurer, and Junior Membership Committee of The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania. The treasurer's reports contain yearly financial statements, and give a picture of the Society's investments, expenses, and assets. The reports show that in the 1960s and early 1970s, the Society was carrying roughly $14,000 in total assets. The reports of the Junior Membership Committee provide information on how many junior members were admitted at a given time, the names of their parents or grandparents, and which junior members had been transferred to senior membership. This series also provides background information on the organization and development of the two chapters of the Society, as well as miscellaneous financial material and several iterations of the state and national constitution and by-laws.</p>

<p>The <emph render="italic">Genealogical Research</emph> series primarily consists of card indexes created and maintained by the Society's registrar to document all of the established Huguenot lines of descent. The series also includes a draft copy of "Huguenot Families," which was prepared by Mrs. D. Dorsey Wolf, Registrar, for the <emph render="italic">Proceedings of The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania.</emph></p>

<p>The <emph render="italic">Printed Material</emph> series documents the activities of The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania and highlights the integral role of religion in its programming. The series consists of newspaper clippings and magazine articles on Huguenot communities and churches both in the United States and abroad, programs and invitations for various commemorative events and church services, and newsletters from both the state and national organizations. The remainder of the collection consists of <emph render="italic">Artifacts</emph>, which are primarily metal printing plates and woodblocks.</p>

<p>The <emph render="italic">Membership</emph> series comprises the bulk of the collection, and primarily contains membership applications. These applications include background information on the member, including age, occupation, immediate family members, religious affiliation, educational history, and other organizations to which the member belongs, as well as genealogical information connecting the member to a verified Huguenot line and references verifying that information. The series also includes handwritten indexes to the application, which cross-reference the surname of the member and the surname of the ancestor with the membership number.</p>

<p>Most of the members are college-educated, and most of the male members are professionals and white-collar workers. Initially, most of the female members listed themselves as housewives, and many appeared to have college degrees. More recently, female members listing professions and careers have increased.</p>

<p>Members range broadly in age and geographic distribution. While the large majority of members reside in Pennsylvania, there are members from all over the United States. Members from other states seem to be interested in the Pennsylvania society because their first ancestors in the United States settled in this state. Pennsylvania was one of the earliest enclaves of Huguenot immigrants in the United States, so it is likely that many Huguenot descendants in the country have some connection to it. In addition, many of the applications are transfer applications from other state member societies, indicating that many members chose to affiliate with the Society of the state in which they resided, and transferred their membership when they moved.</p>

<p>The applications often provide the Protestant denomination and church with which the member is affiliated. Most of the denominations are represented, including Presbyterian, Protestant-Episcopal, Evangelical and Reformed (now part of the United Church of Christ), Methodist, Lutheran, Evangelical Lutheran, Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist-Episcopal, Anglican, Unitarian, Congregational, Quaker, Moravian, Christian Scientist, and Seventh Day Adventist.</p>

<p>The bulk of the applications in the collection represents people who have been accepted as members of the Society. There are a handful of applications that have not been given membership numbers, and may have been rejected. However, there is only one application in the collection that expressly states that it has been rejected by the Society. This applicant was rejected on the grounds of religious affiliation. Although born into the Protestant faith, the applicant converted to Judaism when she married a Jewish man.</p>

<p>The <emph render="italic">Membership</emph> series also includes junior membership applications (arranged alphabetically by last name of member), printed membership lists, and membership cards. The cards are divided into three runs: old membership cards, membership cards, and deceased member cards. The old membership cards record name, address, dues paid, and date of the receipt of dues. These cards appear to date from 1918 to the mid-1950s, but in most cases each individual card covers a ten- to fifteen-year period of dues payment. The membership and deceased member cards include the membership number, name of member, name of spouse, address, ancestor's name, and date elected to membership. These cards primarily span the second half of the 20th century. They were probably created and maintained by the Society's registrar, and therefore, the information included on the card varies slightly as registrars change. The election dates of members on the deceased member cards span from the Society's founding in 1918 to the mid-1970s.</p>

<p>The <emph render="italic">Genealogical Research</emph> series documents the Society's stewardship of recognized Huguenot ancestral lines, and demonstrates its continuing dedication to the exploration of lines that have not yet been established. The series includes six different card indexes: Ancestor/Descendant files, Genealogy cards, the Refugee French Clergymen index, the Walloon (French-speaking people of Celtic descent living in the southern parts of Belgium) index, Swiss family names, and Dutch family names. The files probably all served to verify the connection of members to established Huguenot lines. The registrar of the Society probably maintained the cards, and Helen Noble Worst, the registrar in the early 1950s, was involved in doing at least some of the research.</p>

<p>The series also contains a draft copy of "Huguenot Families" compiled by Mrs. D. Dorsey Wolf, Registrar, for the <emph render="italic">Proceedings of The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania</emph>. The item is not dated, but Mrs. Wolf served in her capacity as registrar from the mid-1950s to 1970. The material is organized by family name, providing a page or two of genealogical information on that line of Huguenot ancestry.</p>

<p>When the collection arrived at HSP, the membership applications were arranged in numerical order by the membership number assigned by The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania. That original order has been maintained, mostly because there were existing indexes that cross-reference this number to the family name of the member and of their ancestors. In addition, some applications appear to be missing, although the membership number of the missing applications has not always been noted. However, three applications (#3427, #3429, and #3437) were expressly kept by the Society when the second batch of applications was sent to HSP in 2000. In the case of the junior membership applications, for which there were no indexes, the original order by membership number has not been kept. The processor felt researchers could better access this subgroup of applications if it were arranged alphabetically by the last name of the member. In 1997, The Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania only kept photocopies of that year's membership applications. Arthur Louis Finnell, Registrar General of the National Huguenot Society, holds the originals at the national headquarters in Bloomington, Minn.</p>
