Abstract

Called the “bard of Wharton Square,” Edmond Kowalewski (1904-1977) was a Polish American poet and writer from Philadelphia. His published compilations include Deaf Walls (1928, 1933) and  Cansticks and Cressets (1959). He also authored  The Secret Place, a Play in Three Acts (1958),  Souvenir of Venice (1960), and  Turk at Work (1965) on the 1915 Armenian genocide. He passed away in 1977 and is buried at Ivy Hill Cemetery in northwest Philadelphia. This collection contains poems, correspondence, much of which is between Kowalewski and his brother, Jozef, but includes letters between Kowalewski and writer Edward Pinkowski; copies of Kowalewski's works; clippings; a small number of family history papers and photographs; and copies of Kowalewski's unpublished autobiography "The Black Lightning."
