Scope and content note
Albert Lerner (1896-1967) was a Philadelphia pharmacist who served with the medical corps of the 314th Regiment infantry in France during World War I. The collection contains five letters written by Lerner in 1918-1919 while serving in Europe (Box 1, Folder 3). There is a group photo of the Medical Corps of the 314th dated April 1918 with all men identified (Box 1, Folder 2). Additionally, Lerner remained active as a veteran and reunion booklets, veterans' lists, and newsletters from 1936-1939 contain information on men who served with this unit. Newspaper clippings, a dedication program for the Log Cabin Memorial at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania (30 September 1922) and a 79th Divison A.E.F. Dedication Service Program at Fort George G. Meade in Maryland (3 May 1936) reflect Lerner's interests and activities as a veteran.
Lerner had two younger brothers who served during World War II and the collection contains correspondences from them. Lt. Joseph Lerner (1916-) served from North Africa and Europe; there are 43 letters dated 1942-1945 from him to his brother Albert and his wife Frances (Box 1, Folder 26). Abraham Lerner (1908-1964) wrote 19 letters to Albert and Frances dated 1944-1945, mostly from training venues in the US (Box 1, Folder 29). The collection also contains some miscellaneous correspondence from non-family members.
