Scope and content note
George Horace Lorimer was editor of The Saturday Evening Post from 1898 to 1936. The main body of the collection consists of incoming and outgoing professional and personal papers; and a 1932 scrapbook of Lorimer's editorials for the Post.
The personal papers in the collection are housed in Boxes 1 and 2. Correspondence with various people has been alphabetized in Box 1. In addition to his work as the editor of The Saturday Evening Post, Mr. Lorimer was an author. His most noted work, Letters of a Self-Made Man to His Son, generates correspondence with his editors at Dodd, Mead and Company and involves such topics as domestic and foreign rights to the work. Additionally, Mr. Lorimer's services on various committees and his interest in collecting antiques generate the balance of his personal correspondence found in Box 2.
The bulk of the collection focuses on Mr. Lorimer's editorial work with the Post and the vast and interesting collection of correspondence that this job generated. Boxes 3-5 house the alphabethized correspondences between many noted people and Mr. Lorimer. There are letters from prominent individuals including the following: Albert J. Beveridge, Josephus Daniels, Theodore Dreiser, George Eastman, Thomas A. Edison, Henry Ford, Hamlin Garland, Herbert Hoover, Huey Long, Edgar Lee Masters, Dorothy Parker, Will Rogers, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Billy Sunday, Woodrow Wilson, and P.G. Wodehouse. When Mr. Lorimer announced his pending retirement, a third collection of letters (Boxes 7-9) were compiled from the numerous letters sent to him beginning late 1936 through much of 1937. These are housed by date and found in the third part of this collection that focuses on his writings, retirement letters, photographs, and those items associated with Adelaide W. Neall, his long-time associate editor at the Post. Ms. Neall worked at the Post from 1909-1942, much of that time working directly with George H. Lorimer. Ms. Neall collected papers for a projected biography of Lorimer; this collection included an album of photographs of Post authors and editors and a scrapbook of letters written to Neall. Among the contributors to Ms. Neall's letter collection were Pearl S. Buck, Calvin Coolidge, William Durant, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ring Lardner, Will Rogers, and Booth Tarkington. The balance of this part of the collection is an eclectic mixture of papers, mostly relating to Mr. Lorimer's editorials.
