Benjamin Franklin’s The
Way to Wealth (1777) was published in France under the title La Science du Bonhomme
Richard, ou moyen façile de payer les impôts. It became one of the most popular
American works in France.
The text, while completely in French, is very legible. Like similar editions, this
book contains Franklin’s assortment of proverbs and observations on wealth, pride,
and folly; as well as transcripts of Franklin’s examination before the House of
Commons in February 1766; Mr. Penn’s examination at the bar of Parliament in
November 1776; and extensive notes on and excerpts from Pennsylvania’s 1776
constitution.
