- Abstract
- The Morris family papers consist of miscellaneous papers pertaining to the Morris family, prominent Quakers of Philadelphia. The materials begin with Luke Wistar Morris, descendant of Anthony Morris and Mary Jones, who immigrated to America 1681. The collection follows the Morris family through several generations: Luke Wistar Morris (1768-1820), a brewer; his son, Samuel B. Morris (1791-1859), a merchant; his grandson, Elliston Perot Morris (1831-1914); and his great-grandson, Marriott Canby Morris (1863-1948). A few women of the family are also represented in the collection, such as Ann Pancoast Morris (1764-1858), second wife of Luke W. Morris; Hannah Ann Morris Buckley (1812-1889), daughter of Luke W. Morris and Ann Pancoast Morris; and Beulah Sansom Morris Rhoads (1829-1923), daughter of Samuel B. Morris. The papers include correspondence, wills, legal and estate papers, deeds, real estate documents, and business records.

Background note
The Morris family of Philadelphia is descended from Anthony Morris (b. 1630) of London, a mariner and trader who was lost at sea sometime around 1656. His only son, Anthony Morris (1654-1721), was active in the Society of Friends and immigrated with his wife, Mary Jones (d. 1688), and their son, Anthony Morris (1681-1763), to America in 1682. The family settled in Burlington, New Jersey. By 1685, he had moved his family to Philadelphia, building a home on Front Street between Walnut and Chestnut Streets. Anthony worked as a brewer and established the Anthony Morris Brewhouse around 1687. He was also active in politics and civic affairs. Anthony was among the founders of Philadelphia’s first public school in 1689 (later Penn Charter School), commissioned a justice of the peace in 1692, elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 1694, and served as mayor of Philadelphia from 1703 to 1704.
His son, Anthony Morris (1681-1763), followed his father into the brewing profession, being apprenticed to Henry and Mary Badcock [Babcock] in 1695. He later built the Morris Brewery at Second and Arch Street. Anthony was also active in local politics, being elected a member of the Philadelphia Common Council in 1715 and chosen in 1721 as representative in the Assembly of the Province of Pennsylvania. In 1738 he was elected mayor of Philadelphia. Morris married Phoebe Guest (1685-1786), and among their children was a son, also Anthony Morris (1705-1780).
Anthony Morris (1705-1780) remained in the family brewing business. He is often referred to as “Anthony of Southwark” since he owned two properties, “Solitude” and “Peckham,” in the Southwark section of the city. Anthony married Sarah Powell (1713-1751) in 1730 and later Elizabeth Hudson (circa 1721-1783) in 1752. Anthony and Sarah had several children, among whom were Deborah Morris (1736-1787), Thomas Morris (1745-1809), and Samuel Morris (1734-1812).
Samuel Morris (1734-1812) was the son of Anthony Morris and Sarah Powell. (They had a previous son, Anthony, who died in infancy.) He married Rebecca Wistar (1735-1791), daughter of Caspar Wistar (circa 1695 - circa 1751) and sister to Sara Wistar (1738-1815), and the couple had nine children who reached adulthood. In addition to working in the family brewing business, Samuel co-founded the mercantile and sugar refining firm of Morris and Miercken with his brother, Isaac (1741-1806), and Peter Miercken. Samuel also had a successful military career. In 1774, he was appointed second lieutenant of the Light Horse of the City of Philadelphia (which later became the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry.) With the First Troop, Samuel crossed the Delaware River with General George Washington and fought in the Battle of Trenton in December 1776. He also participated in battles at Princeton, Brandywine, and Germantown. He resigned from First Troop in 1786.
Luke Wistar Morris (1768-1830), sixth child of Samuel Morris and Rebecca Wistar, was mostly associated with his brother Isaac Wistar in the family brewing business. Together, they successfully ran Luke W. Morris and Co., a brewery at Dock and Pear streets. After they retired from the business around 1810, Luke founded the lumber companies of Morris and Maxfield with Joseph Maxfield, and later Stephen Maxfield; and Morris and Smith with John D. Smith. In 1817, Luke Wistar purchased a home at 225 South 8th Street, which became known as the “Morris Mansion” in Philadelphia. Luke Wistar married twice. His first marriage, to his cousin Elizabeth Morris Buckley (1771-1797), produced one son, Samuel Buckley Morris. With his second wife, Ann Pancoast (1764-1858), he had two children, Elizabeth Buckley and Hannah Ann.
Hannah Ann Morris (1812-1889) married Effingham Lawrence Buckley in 1833, and she gave birth to a daughter, Annie Morris Buckley in 1836. Effingham L. Buckley died in 1837.
Samuel Buckley Morris (1791-1859), eldest child of Luke W. Morris, was a merchant and established the shipping firm of Waln and Morris with L. Morris Waln. In 1825, he married Hannah Perot (1792-1831), and the couple had three children, Samuel Buckley II, Beulah Sansom, and Elliston Perot Morris. Hannah P. Morris died suddenly in 1831, and in 1835, Samuel moved with their children to her father’s house in Germantown. The house in Germantown, now known as the Deshler-Morris House, had provided refuge for George Washington during the 1793 yellow fever epidemic. Though retired from business, Samuel Morris remained active in the community. He founded the Savings Fund of Germantown, was a founder of Haverford College, and served on the Committee for Westtown School.
Samuel Buckley Morris II became a minister. His sister, Beulah Sansom Morris married Charles Rhoads in 1870. The youngest sibling, Elliston P. Morris (1831-1914), attended the Westtown School and Haverford College, eventually taking over management of the family’s real estate and investments. Materials in the collection suggest that Elliston was also an attorney practicing estate law. In 1861, he married Martha Canby, and their first child, Marriott Canby Morris was born in 1863. The couple soon moved back to Deshler-Morris House and had three more children: Elizabeth Canby, Samuel Buckley III, and Elliston Perot II. Their youngest two sons died in the 1880s. Like his father, Elliston P. Morris was community minded, serving on the board of the Savings fund of Germantown and with several Quaker-affiliated organizations.
Marriott Canby Morris (1863-1948) was the eldest son of Elliston P. Morris, and like his father, he attended the Westtown School and Haverford College, graduating from the latter in 1885. In 1897, he married Jane Rhoads, and together the couple had three children. Marriott C. Morris was an avid photographer and cyclist, who maintained membership in several cycling clubs. In the community, he served with several civic organizations, and particularly with the Germantown Boys’ Club for over sixty years.
