Background note

The Netherlands Society of Philadelphia was founded in 1892 by twenty men lineally descended from Dutch colonists in America. They were led by Peter Dirck Keyser and Samuel W. Pennypacker, future governor of Pennsylvania. The two men were chosen as the club’s first president and vice president respectively. Herbert A. Drake and Henry C. Conrad also served as founding vice presidents. George R. Van Dusen was the first recording secretary. The purpose of the society was to preserve the history, traditions, and genealogical records of the Dutch colonists in America. Membership was limited to men of Dutch descent. The society honored its Dutch heritage and the Union of Utrecht, which united the eleven provinces of the Netherlands, with an annual banquet. The event originally occurred on or near January 23rd, the anniversary of the treaty. For many years, the annual meeting was held concurrently with the anniversary dinner. Lunch meetings and outings comprised the remainder of the society’s social calendar.

The society was involved with a variety of Netherlands related projects and activities. The group raised money for various causes, including Dutch refugees during World War II and flood relief in the Netherlands in 1953. In 1967, the society established the Netherlands Society of Philadelphia Gold Medal to recognize the leadership and service of an individual who promotes cooperation and friendship between the Netherlands and the United States. The medal was awarded annually through 1980, and sporadically thereafter. In the late 20th century, the society supported historical and cultural projects, such as Dutch-American Heritage Day and the New Netherlands Festival. One notable project associated with the New Netherlands Festival was the construction of a replica of Henry Hudson’s ship de Halve Maen in 1988-1989. The captain of the ship at the time of construction was society president Jonathan de Jonge.
