Abstract
This collection contains the records of the New Immigrants Initiative, a multi-year series of projects started by the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies and completed by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, which explored the history and experience of non-European immigrant communities in the Philadelphia area. The purpose of these projects was to document these communities for the historical record and to create interpretive exhibits, publications, and programs that educate about the recent immigrant experience. Five communities were initially part of the project, with four being fully finished: Indian, Arab, African, Latino, and Korean (started but not completed). Included in the collection are oral history transcripts, photographs, printed material, ephemera, and correspodence. There are also numerous audio cassette tapes and VHS tapes.

Biographical/Historical note

The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies operated from 1972 until 2002 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In January of 2002, it merged with the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and its collections were integrated into HSP's. The New Immigrants Initiative was a multi-year series of projects initiatied by the Balch Institute and continued by HSP that explored the history and experience of non-European immigrant communities in the Philadelphia area. The projects involved a combination of documentation and outreach, intended to document these communities for the historical record and to create interpretive exhibits, publications, and programs that educate various audiences about the recent immigrant experience. Five communities were initially part of the project, with four being fully finished: Indian, Arab, African, Latino, and Korean (started but not completed).

The African project resulted in publications that educated the general public about the African immigrant community and compiled community resources for immigrants. The project also produced an exhibit, Extended Lives, which was on display at the Balch Institute in 2001. This exhibit and the publications were the result of two years of fieldwork in the African communities in Philadelphia. Anthropologist Leigh Swigart collected oral histories from community members, and photographer Vera Viditz-Ward documented community activities.

The Arab project compiled mostly photographs of local Arabic communities and families in the Philadelphia area between the years 1999 and 2000.

The South Asian project produced a book of photographs by David H. Wells called Live Like the Banyan Tree, which documented the South Asian communities in Philadelphia. Another result of this project was a notebook created from ephemera donated to the Balch Institute, similar in scope to the community resource material produced for the African project. This notebook of resources and ephemera was also called  Live Like the Banyan Tree.

The Latino project was the last project completed for the New Immigrants Initiative and resulted in an exhibit, Latino Philadelphia: Our Journeys, Our Communities / Filadelfia Latina: Nuestros Caminos, Nuestras Comunidades. This exhibit was installed at Taller Puertorriqueño's Lorenzo Homar Gallery from October 25, 2003 to February 15, 2004. Most of the photographs in this exhibit were taken by Philadelphia photographer Tony Rocco. Oral history interviews for this project were conduced by Joseph Gonzales, a Ph.D. candidate at Temple University, in 2001-2003.

Scope and Contents note

This collection is arranged based on the chronology of the projects, and the contents date from 1976 to 2007. The New Immigrants Initiative initially was supposed to document five immigrant groups: African, Arabic, South Asian, Latino, and Korean, but the Korean project was never completed and there is no material about Korean immigrants in this collection. The projects that are documented here include oral history audiocassette tapes and transcripts, photographs, video tapes, digital materials and computer disks, printed material, and ephemera.

Series I. The African Project is divided into five subseries: Oral history interviews, Publications, Ephemera, Photographs, and Video and digital materials. This project has the greatest number of oral history interview tapes and transcripts out of all the New Immigrants Initiative projects. Most transcript files include duplicates, often with notes written by interviewers or project staff. These tapes and transcripts are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the interviewee. The publications present in this series were compiled by the Balch Institute, partly from materials found in the Ephemera subseries. The original arrangement of the photographs has been retained and they are alphabetical by subject.

Series II. The Arab Project is entirely photographs except for a single oral history interview on audiocassette tape. The photographs are housed in several boxes and arranged alphabetically by subject. There is a lot of duplication in this series and photos of a location or individual may be present in all three boxes. The photographs in Box 12 appear to be smaller groups of photographs selected from the ones in Boxes 13 and 14. Researchers interested in a specific location, topic, or individual should be sure to check all boxes.

Series III. The South Asian Project is entirely ephemera collected for the project and video tapes. Researchers interested in oral history interviews of South Asian immigrants should see the Balch Institute's South Asian Immigrants in the Philadelphia Area Oral History Project (Collection 3211) at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Portions of this collection are available online.

Series IV. The Latinos Project is divided into four subseries: Oral history interviews, Ephemera, Photographs, and Video and digital materials. The oral history interviews include both tapes and transcripts and are arranged alphabetically by last name of interviewee. Photographs are arranged alphabetically by subject. Most of the photographs were taken by Tony Rocco.
