Abstract
The Philadelphia Ethical Society is a humanist congregation founded in 1885 by Samuel Burns Weston. The society is a founding member of the American Ethical Union. It promotes Ethical Humanism, which is both a religious and an educational movement. From its inception, the group has supported progressive causes and worked to improve the lives of disadvantaged people. The society established the Neighborhood Guild, Southwark Neighborhood House, Camp Linden, and the Rose Rappoport Long Memorial Scholarship. The Philadelphia Ethical Society continues to operate in the present day. The records document the Philadelphia Ethical Society’s philosophy, organization, and activities from its founding to the 21st century. The collection includes board minutes, correspondence, reports, financial and membership records, committee records, lectures, newsletters and other serials, student scholarship files, song books, invitations, clippings, photographs, and other materials. There are some materials from Ethical Humanist organizations in other cities and several boxes of the papers of Philadelphia Ethical Society founder Samuel Burns Weston.

Background note

The Ethical Culture movement began in New York in 1876 under the leadership of Felix Adler, who believed there existed a need for a religion based solely on ethics. He maintained that people of all faiths or no faith could meet on the common ground of moral conscience. The movement coalesced under Adler the next year into the Society for Ethical Culture in New York. In 1883, a second society was founded in Chicago by William M. Salter.

On 5 April 1885, Samuel Burns Weston gave an address titled “The Need of an Ethical Religion” at the City Institute in Philadelphia. The lecture was the first in a series of six that prompted the founding of the Society for Ethical Culture of Philadelphia. On 1 June 1885, twenty-four people met and organized the society. The group commenced Sunday meetings and activities for adults and children in the October of the same year at Natatorium Hall. Weston led the society until 1890, when he left in favor of other endeavors. William M. Salter led the group from 1892 to 1897, when Weston was elected Director, a position he then held until his retirement in 1934.

Membership in the society grew, and meeting places were shifted many times over the years to accommodate. A house at 1324 Spruce Street was purchased and opened in 1914. Meetings were moved to the Academy of Music in 1921, where attendance averaged 1200. By the society’s fortieth anniversary in 1925, membership had grown to almost 600. In 1928, the society purchased 1906-1908 South Rittenhouse Square for $128,000. Sunday meetings were moved to the new location in 1932.

The society invested heavily in social service projects from the beginning. The first of these was the Neighborhood Guild. In 1886, they organized a group of local boys working on the street into the Working Boys Club. The club’s scope was expanded from the boys to the whole family, and it was transformed into the Neighborhood Guild. Control of the group was given to the Neighborhood Guild Association, which was comprised of prominent citizens. Also in 1886, the society founded an ethical culture school for children in Center City, with a branch in West Philadelphia.

Social welfare projects continued in the twentieth century. In 1906, the society purchased four adjoining properties on Ellsworth Street, where it established the Southwark Neighborhood House for social settlement work. Mrs. Samuel Fels donated two houses on Front Street in 1910. These properties were adjacent to the house and allowed for expansion of services and facilities. In 1915, the society purchased a farm in the Perkiomen Valley and established a summer camp for children of the Southwark Neighborhood. Camp Linden was administered by Southwark Neighborhood House and its successor organizations. Samuel Fels donated a 69 acre property on the Brandywine a few miles north of Chester in 1925, and Camp Linden was relocated. The camp closed in 1981 because the administering organization, United Communities of Southeastern Pennsylvania, lacked the funds to make necessary repairs. Operations were returned to the society, which sold a portion of the property to fund renovations. The camp reopened in the late 1990s as a day program camp.

In 1959, the society received a bequest of money and property from Rose Rappaport Long. The proceeds were used to establish the Rose Rappaport Long Memorial Scholarship in 1962. Originally, the scholarship was a $400 renewable annual award made to one graduating public high school student with demonstrated need. Award amounts increased to $1,000 in the 1980s, with several students receiving support annually.

The Philadelphia Ethical Society still operates today on Rittenhouse Square, supporting progressive causes and conducting humanist religious services and classes.

Series 2. Samuel Burns Weston (1832-1938, undated)

Scope and content note

This series contains several boxes of the papers and writings of Philadelphia Ethical Society co-founder Samuel Burns Weston (1855-1936). Weston graduated from Antioch College in 1876 and from Harvard Divinity School in 1879. He served for eighteen months as an unordained minister for the Second Congregational Society, a Unitarian Church in Leicester, Massachusetts. For the next four years, Weston studied, both abroad and in New York under Felix Adler, and prepared to lead an Ethical Society. In the spring of 1885, he gave four lectures in a series of six, which led to the founding of the Society for Ethical Culture in Philadelphia. There are some family documents, clippings, and correspondence, but the bulk of the series is comprised of Weston’s writings, sermons and lectures.
