Abstract
Captain Samuel Pile was a prominent Philadelphia merchant and trader, the grandson of Nicholas Pyle (b. 1666) who emigrated from England to Chester County, Pennsylvania. Captain Pile was born on April 26, 1771 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, to Samuel and Elizabeth Pile. He married Rebecca Morgan in 1795; and they had one child. Samuel Pile died on September 25, 1811, and is buried in Old Pine Street Presbyterian Church cemetery, Philadelphia. Pile was also a member of the Grand Lodge (Masons).
The Pile family papers contain correspondence related to shipping and commerce, as well as letters to other members of the Pile family. They include personal news and considerable information on Philadelphia, New York, and New Orleans. Some letters are in Portuguese.
