- Abstract
- This collection contains the papers of various members of the Price family, mainly Eli Kirk Price (1797 – 1884), John Sergeant Price (1831 – 1897), Eli Kirk Price II (1860 - 1933), Philip Price (1898 - 1989), Eli Kirk Price III (1904 - 1976), and Philip Price Jr. (1934 - ). Most of the men of the family were lawyers, and the professional documents pertain almost exclusively to real estate and estate law. Correspondence decreases by generation, but real estate documents increase in equal measure. The entire family was very involved in Philadelphia civic, cultural, and charitable organizations, and these interests are represented in both the professional and personal papers. Additionally, the family was connected to the Preston Retreat, a maternity hospital, from its beginning to its absorption by the Pennsylvania Hospital, and the collection contains a substantial number of related papers. The collection also contains a large number of documents and deeds which reflect the transformation of a section of West Philadelphia known as the Rose Estate from a rural township to a developed part of the city. The graphic materials include blueprints by the landscape architect J. Greber for the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1918. Two notable artifacts are part of the collection: a small cutting of George Washington’s hair and a cuff from Commodore John Rodger’s coat.

Background note
Eli Kirk Price (1797 – 1884), was a Philadelphia lawyer who was active in many civic and social organizations. Eli K. Price was born on July 20, 1797, in East Bradford Township, Chester County. His parents, Philip Price and Rachel Kirk, were both members of the Society of Friends. In his youth he attended the local country schools, and he spent the academic year of 1813 – 1814 at Westtown, a Quaker boarding school. He then moved to Philadelphia and worked in the counting house of merchant Thomas P. Cope (1768 – 1854) and later, I. C. Jones, Oakford, and Company. Due to dwindling prospects in international trade, he changed course and studied law in the office of John Sergeant (1779 – 1852), for whom he would name his only son. In 1822, he was admitted to the bar. His law practice became dominated by real estate, and he was known as an expert in title searches. Early in his career, Price mentored Benjamin Harris Brewster, who would serve as U. S. Attorney General from 1881 to 1885.
His career accomplishments include being a member of the Board of Revenue Commissioners in 1846 and 1848, and serving as a Pennsylvania state senator from 1854 through 1856. As a senator, he created the Consolidation Act of 1854, also known as the "Price Act." This piece of legislation became the new Philadelphia city charter and consolidated several municipalities into the city, greatly increasing its size. He also authored or helped to pass legislation relating to property sale and ownership, including acts that strengthened women's control over their own property. In 1867, he was instrumental in the founding of the Fairmount Park Commission and the purchase of the land that originally made up the park grounds. He served as chairman of the Park Commission until his death in 1884.
He was active in many other Philadelphia organizations, as a founding member of the Woodlands Cemetery and its secretary and treasurer, president of the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society, a member of the American Philosophical Society, and a member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. In 1882 he received an honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Pennsylvania, where he had served variously as trustee of the university, a manager of the University Hospital, and on the Library and Law Committees. He also served as treasurer of the Preston Retreat, a maternity hospital for "indigent married women of good character." The Retreat was funded by a bequest from Dr. Jonas Preston in 1836. Construction began in 1837, but ran over budget. Loss of value in the endowment delayed the hospital’s opening until 1865. In the interim, the Foster Home Association used the building rent-free as a foster home. The Preston Retreat eventually acquired a reputation for very low mortality, due to a combination of patient selection and extraordinary attendance to cleanliness. The Price family remained affiliated with the Preston Retreat until its acquisition by the Pennsylvania Hospital in 1960.
Eli K. Price married Anna Embree (1799 – 1862) of West Bradford, Chester County in June 1828. She was the daughter of James Embree and Rebecca Kirk, sister of Eli’s mother Rachel Kirk. The couple had three children, John Sergeant Price (1831 – 1897), Rebecca Embree Price (1829 – 1861), and Sibyl Eliana Price (1834 – 1882).
Eli Price remained vigorous into his old age, even working in the office the day before his death. His last public paper was read before the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society in early November 1884. On the 15th of November, he awoke in the early morning hours feeling ill and died shortly after, attended by granddaughter Anna R. Withers.
Over the decades, Eli Price invested heavily in real estate in Philadelphia, and many of his holdings were in the still rural Blockley Township, which became West Philadelphia. His will established a trust for the benefit of his surviving children and grandchildren. His son, J. Sergeant Price, was one of the original executors. This role, with management of the real estate, was passed down through successive generations to Eli K. Price II, Eli K. Price III, and Philip Price.
Rebecca E. Price (1829 – 1861) was the eldest child of Eli and Anna. She contracted scarlet fever and suffered complications, resulting in periods of debilitating illness. As a young woman, she traveled extensively when well enough. She married Philadelphia silk merchant and widower Hanson L. Withers in 1858. In December 1860, she gave birth to a daughter, Anna Rebecca Withers (1860 – 1937) (m. Dr. Edward Martin). She succumbed to her chronic illness about a month later in January 1861. Her husband passed away nine days following. The infant Anna Rebecca was raised by Eli and Anna Price.
Like her daughter, Anna E. Price was plagued by ill health. Her complaints were of a seasonal asthmatic nature, and she sought relief in the country air by summering at West Chester. When her condition allowed, she devoted herself to charitable work, serving on the Board of Counsel of the Foster Home Association. She was actively involved in management and fundraising. In mid-May 1862, she returned to the city from West Chester and soon became very sick. She was taken back to her country home, but was unable to recover and died on 4 June 1862. Her husband dealt with his many griefs by privately publishing a memorial book, Rebecca, about his daughter, which included a tribute to his wife.
Sybil E. Price (1834 – 1882) was the youngest of the three children. She married the Reverend Starr Hoyt Nichols (1838 – 1909) in April 1871, and they resided in Philadelphia. The couple had no children.
The middle child, John Sergeant Price (1831 – 1897), known as “Sergeant,” followed his father into law, graduating from the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1854. That same year he was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar and began working at his father's legal practice. Son-in-law Jonathan Willis Martin (m. Elizabeth C. Price) eventually joined him in practice. Outside of his professional life, he was heavily involved in many local organizations, including the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind, Woodlands Cemetery, Reliance Insurance Company, and the Union League. Like his father he was involved with several committees at the University of Pennsylvania, including the Society of the Alumni of the Law Department and the Central Committee of the Alumni. He served as treasurer of American Philosophical Society for 22 years and the Preston Retreat for 30 years. For the latter, he invested in real estate in Clinton County and southwest Philadelphia, which his son, Eli K. Price II, and grandsons would eventually sell off for development. J. Sergeant Price died in Cape May on 16 August 1897.
J. Sergeant Price married Sarah “Sallie” A. Baker (1837 – 1908), daughter of Isaac and Anna Elizabeth Baker. Together they had three children: Eli Kirk Price II (1860 – 1933), Elizabeth Cornelius Price (1864 – 1932) and John Sergeant Price Jr. (1883 – 1948).
Elizabeth Cornelius Price (1864 – 1932), founded the Garden Club of Philadelphia with Ernestine Goodman in 1904. She married Jonathan Willis Martin (1856 – 1930). They lived in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, and had four children: Sergeant Price Martin (1886 – 1948), Marion Willis Martin (1889 – 1980), Jonathan Willis Martin (1892 – 1897), and Elizabeth Gwen Martin (1894 – 1950). Their daughter, E. Gwen Martin, was a horse breeder and president of the Philadelphia Girl Scout Council. Sergeant Price Martin was a physician in Buffalo, New York. Marion Willis Martin married Edward Florens Rivinus (1878 – 1958) and wrote many books about Philadelphia and her life, including Lights Along the Schuylkill, Lights Along the Delaware, Distaff Descent, and A Full Life, her autobiography.
John Sergeant Price Jr. (1883 – 1948) never married and died without issue.
Eli Kirk Price II (1860 - 1933), known as “Kirk,” was born on 10 May 1860 and followed the family tradition of practicing in the firm founded by his namesake. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1881 and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1883, the same year he was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar. Upon the death of his father, he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Jonathan Willis Martin, which lasted until the latter’s elevation to the bench.
His most notable achievements were civic in nature, the result of his work with the Fairmont Park Commission and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He was Fairmount Park commissioner during planning of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and was also involved in the planning and construction of the new building for the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 1929 he received the Philadelphia Award in recognition for those accomplishments. From 1926 until his death in 1933, he was president of the art museum corporation. Other achievements include the Beaux Arts Medal of Honor of the Societe des Architetes Diplomes, being named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, and being appointed an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects. In addition to these accomplishments, he was also the treasurer of Woodlands Cemetery, vice president of the Fairmount Park Art Association, president of the City Parks Association, treasurer of the American Philosophical Society, treasurer and president of Preston Retreat, and a member of Philadelphia's Art Jury.
In 1896 he married Evelyn Taylor (1866 – 1946), daughter of Mary Meigs and John Hancock Taylor. She served as president of the Rittenhouse Square Improvement Association and the Rittenhouse Square Flower Association. The couple had four children: Philip Price (1898 – 1989) (m. Sarah Meade Harrison), Rachel Price (1899 – 1986) (m. David Williamson), Evelyn Price (1902 – 1993) (m. Charles R. Hamilton), and Eli Kirk Price III (1904 – 1976). Eli K. Price II had a heart attack at his office in City Hall on 24 January 1933. He was attended by a physician and transported home to 1709 Walnut Street, where he died shortly after.
Philip Price (1898 – 1989), like his father, grandfather, and great grandfather, was a lawyer. After serving in the Naval Reserve during World War I, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1922. He then joined the family practice, although he left to join Dechert, Price, and Rhoads in 1928. As a trial lawyer, he mostly represented corporations, including the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company, the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, and East Coast railroads in the Noerr Motor Freight case, which was heard in the United States Supreme Court. He was also heavily involved in civic and charity organizations, including the Fairmount Park Commission (where he served as president and treasurer), the Fairmount Park Art Association, the Philadelphia Art Commission, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Overbrook School for the Blind. He was the fourth of his line to serve as treasurer of the Preston Retreat.
Philip Price married Sarah Meade Harrison in 1922 and they had five children: Sarah Price Parker, Evelyn Price Scott, Nancy Price Hiestand, John Sergeant Price, and Philip Price Jr.
Eli Kirk Price III (1904 – 1976) worked as an estate trustee and real estate manager in the office of Eli Kirk Price from 1933 until 1973, except for a stint in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1946. He was also the assistant treasurer for the Woodlands Cemetery Company, continuing the long family tradition of involvement with the cemetery. Like his relatives, he was involved in many civic and cultural organizations, including the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society, the Geographical Society of Philadelphia, and the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. He was also a manager of the Preston Maternity Hospital (formerly the Preston Retreat) until it was absorbed by the Pennsylvania Hospital in 1960.
Philip Price Jr. (b. 1934) is a lawyer specializing in property and real estate law. He also worked on urban revitalization projects, like the Allegheny West Community Development Project, which led to changes in tax law, giving corporations credits for investing in inner city redevelopment. From 1978 to 1982 he was a Pennsylvania state senator. Like his father and ancestors, he was and continues to be involved in many civic, cultural, and charity organizations. From 1983 until 2003 he was a board member at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. He is also involved in the Fairmount Park system, serving on committees for the Fairmount Park Commission, the Fairmount Park Conservancy, and the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation trust. Philip Price Jr. was instrumental in furthering the preservation of the Woodlands Cemetery by helping to create the Woodlands Trust for Historic Preservation.
Scope and content note
This collection contains papers created by various members of the Price family, relating to their professional and personal lives. The majority of the collection is divided into series by individual, following patrilineal descent and arranged in chronological order of birth. Less well-presented members of the family and members of related families are collected in other series.
Series 1, Eli Kirk Price (1779 – 1936), consists of Eli K. Price’s papers which document his life professionally and personally. The professional papers are dominated by correspondence. His letters are grouped by correspondent and then arranged chronologically. There is a significant section of third party correspondence. Additionally, there are a few estate documents and miscellaneous papers. The personal papers consist largely of correspondence and manuscripts. The series concludes with papers relating to the estate of Eli K. Price.
Series 2, John Sergeant Price (1839 – 1968), contains the papers of John Sergeant Price. Professional correspondence and estate records represent his law practice outside of real estate. The largest part of this series consists of records pertaining to the Preston Retreat. The small section of personal papers includes correspondence and miscellaneous papers arranged chronologically.
Series 3, Eli Kirk Price II (1839 – 1936), reveals the professional and civic life of Eli K. Price II. While professional correspondence is limited, several account journals document the workings of his legal practice. Other legal papers include estate documents and American Philosophical Society bank statements. The majority of the subseries is devoted to records of the Preston Retreat, which are arranged chronologically. Personal records are sparse, but include a letter from George Washington to James Tilghman, given to him by his namesake.
Series 4, Philip Price (1876 – 1971), is a small series highlighting some aspects of the professional life of Philip Price. The professional papers are limited to an account journal, some correspondence, and some estate documents. Only a few items relate to the Preston Retreat. His personal papers are limited to two folders.
Series 5, Other Price family members (1729 – 1964), consists of the papers of all Price family members not represented in other series. These include earlier Price generations and descendants of Eli K. Price as well as others not in the direct line of Eli K. Price.
Series 6, Related families (1782 – 1937), is comprised of the papers of families and individuals connected to the Price family by marriage. The Embree and Baker families contributed the largest share, followed by the Taylor-Meigs-Rodgers family group, which is connected by marriage through Eli K. Price II. Most of the documents are letters, genealogical records, and estate papers.
Series 7, Real estate (1744 – 1964), consists of extensive real estate documents and deeds, through which can be traced the development of two sections of Philadelphia west of the Schuylkill River. The estate of Eli K. Price held a large tract sometimes called the Rose estate in West Philadelphia. The Preston Retreat owned a tract in the Kingsessing section of Philadelphia as well as land in other Pennsylvania counties, particularly Clinton County. The papers document real estate transactions including sales, mortgages, ground rent, and coal leases.
Series 8, Graphics and printed material (1850 – 1971), is comprised of all the graphic materials in the collection including blueprints, maps, photographs, images, and albums. The printed matter is also in this series. There are many blueprints and maps, mostly related to real estate transactions, but they include a set of blueprints by the landscape architect J. Greber for the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1918. The photographs of the earlier Price generations are sparse, but the Price-Taylor family is well-represented. Printed matter includes pamphlets, speeches, briefs of title, reports, and newspaper pages and clippings.
Series 9, Artifacts and miscellaneous (1789 – 1937), consists of a small number of artifacts and miscellaneous papers. The notable artifacts are a lock of George Washington’s hair and a cuff from the coat of Commodore John Rodgers.
