Background note

The Ujima Collective was founded in 1997 founded by Louis Manon, Oscar Gamble, and David Greason. At the time, Greason was a faculty fellow working towards a PhD in History at Temple University. The collective's goals were to promote cross-cultural interaction and activism among students of color at Philadelphia colleges and universities. It published a newsletter, sponsored events, and provided a network with other organizations, including university student groups, churches, and service organizations. In addition to its local focus, the Ujima Collective was affiliated with the Black Radical Congress, a nationwide social justice network founded in 1998, and it organized an offshoot conference on the Black Left in October 1998.

Scope and content note

This collection includes an array of the Ujima Collective’s organizational records and newsletters, as well as publications, flyers, and other ephemera from related groups in Philadelphia. There is a substantial collection of newsletters, newspapers, and brochures from many grassroots activist organizations both affiliated with and independent of local colleges and universities. There are also a few local business directories. This collection provides a useful overview of the underrepresented populations in the political and arts scenes of the late 1990s in Philadelphia. Aside from an essay by David Greason on empowering African-American college students, the collection contaisn little personal information on the founders of the organization.
