Both Holy Redeemer and the Chinese Christian Church served as community centers, sponsoring American and Chinese holiday celebrations and offering recreational services to the neighborhood. Clubs at Holy Redeemer were named "Yu Pin" after the exiled Archbishop of China, Paul Yu Pin, whose visit to Philadelphia in 1939 was a catalyst for the founding of Holy Redeemer.
