STEERAGE EXPERIENCE

WELCOME to the Balch Institute's Steerage Experience tour!  Listed below are links to pages bearing personal accounts of the steamship experience as witnessed by the emigrants themselves.  The first is taken from an unidentified traveler aboard a Russian-East Asian steamer and includes several images.

The second account is that of  ``undercover" agents who traveled in the steerage of 12 trans-Atlantic ships.  The Report, compiled by Anna Herkner, was printed in the 1911 Reports of the Immigration Commission of the United States Senate, 61st Congress, 3d Session, Document No. 753.

The third is an article appearing in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, volume 31, no. 185 (October 1865).  In it the author describes his voyage in the steerage of Inman Line's ``City of New York."
