The Great Presidential Race of 1856
lithograph, 1856
Both Fillmore and Buchanan falter over campaign related issues--particularly slavery --while Frémont races onward towards victory. Fillmore's weakly "goose" was all spine with "no back bone," much like his perceived campaign persona. Buchanan's "Buck" crashed into his party's controversial platform.
