Millard Fillmore was often characterized as the candidate able to supersede sectional conflicts and parties by pleading for the preservation of the Union through yet another compromise. Here he stands as the "right man for the right place," keeping Frémont (North) and Buchanan (South), from armed conflict--or civil war.
