The Great American Buck Hunt of 1856

The Great American Buck Hunt of 1856
lithograph, 1856

Presidential candidates John C. Fremont and Millard Fillmore try unsuccessfully to stop James "Buck" Buchanan as he bounds into the White House. The gun supplied to Fremont by the abolisionists backfired--in much the same way the abolisionists' presence in the Republican Party is said to have doomed Fremont's chances for the Presidency. Meanwhile, Filmore aimed to take one last shot at Buchanan from the "Union Rock" using his "American" rifle.
