Research By Mail query from a gun collector…

February 29, 2000

I have a Model 1809 Prussian musket which was no doubt imported into the United States during the Civil War era as the barrel is stamped CITY OF PHILADA, and below that A[ndrew] WURFFLEIN…

What I am researching is any documented use of these weapons supplied by Wurfflein to Philadelphia/Pennsylvania troops, such as what units may have received them, when they may have received them, etc. Also any information on the contracts between Wurfflein and the City of Philadelphia concerning these muskets would be of interest…

Enclosed are photocopies, taken from Frank H. Taylor's Philadelphia in the Civil War: 1861-1865 and J. Thomas Scharff and Thompson Westcott's History of Philadelphia in regard to armaments supplied to Philadelphia troops during the Civil War…

One of the best works on manufacturing in the antebellum and post-Civil War period for Philadelphia and vicinity is the work entitled The Manufactories and Manufacturers of Pennsylvania in the Nineteenth Century, published in 1874. Regrettably, nothing appears for an Andrew Wurfflein and Company, though he does appear as a gunsmith and gun manufacturer in the 1860 and 1865 Philadelphia City Directory…

If there were contracts between the City of Philadelphia and Andrew Wurfflein they would be housed with the Philadelphia City Archives. You might try contacting them for possible information…
