While occupying Philadelphia, British soldiers were housed in a number of locations, including these barracks in the Northern Liberties. Officers commonly occupied the abandoned homes of Philadelphia’s wealthiest citizens, among them Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Wharton. British General William Howe lived in the home of financier Robert Morris, which would later become the President’s House, used at different times by George Washington and John Adams, as well as their families, slaves and servants.
