Scope and content note

The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA), the first association of its kind in the state, was instituted in 1867 and incorporated in 1868. Housed in three boxes, eleven volumes, and one flat file, this collection constitutes mid-nineteenth century to early twentieth century records of the PSPCA, along with a number of mostly early twentieth century pamphlets from other animal protection societies in the United States and overseas. A list of pamphlets in the collection is provided in this guide. Loose records that include correspondence, reports, lists of fines collected, member lists, and financial papers are roughly filed by year and type in Box 1. Bound volumes include: a letterpress book of 1872-1876, membership books, case books, a volume of filed complaints and resulting PSPCA actions, reports of disabled animals, a volume of receipts and payments, and a general receipt book.
