The 'Mustang' Team
lithograph, 1856

Critics of the Republican Party often accused several influential and partisan newspaper editors, including Horace Greeley and Thurlow Weed (1st and 2nd on the horse), of controlling Frémont's campaign, while the candidate willingly followed their instruction. Frémont's beautiful and spirited young wife, Jessie, sitting in the cart behind her husband, faithfully accompanies the "Mustang Team."
