Scope and content note
John Edward Sage (died 2002) was born in Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania to Joseph T. Sage and Nora L. Richter Sage. Prior to World War II, he served with the Pennsylvania National Guard. During the war he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps, where he served in Burma and India. In 1945 he married Anna Kominetz, and together they had three children: David, Anne, and Kevin. The family moved to Dauphin County and lived outside Harrisburg from the 1950s to the early 1970s. During this time, John worked in the civil service sector, and he made frequent trips overseas to countries such as Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam. Sage was also a licensed commercial pilot and aircraft mechanic. In 1973, the Sages moved to Norman, Oklahoma, where they remained for the rest of their lives.
This collection documents John E. Sage’s life, family, and careers, from his graduation from Connellsville High School to his death in Norman. It contains vital records, photographs, notes, identification and business cards, passports, ephemera, correspondence, and a few artifacts. Most of the collection is in English, but a few items are printed in South Asian and Middle Eastern languages. Especially notable among the materials is a sizable set of letters between John and Anna from 1944 to 1945. There is also a smaller but no less interesting set of incoming letters to the Sages’ son, David, from the early 1970s. There is scant information in the collection on John’s parents, along with a few late 20th century poems written by John.
